I just realized that the thing that makes anime great is the fact that it doesn't try to appeal to the lowest common denominator, but the fact that it tries to satisfy even the smallest niche.

It's like the antithesis of Hollywood in that way. It seems so obvious now that I thought of it.

No, it's just not trying to appeal to your demographic, so it feels new and different. You'll get over it.

No he's partially right, anime aims at a lot of different Otaku who have different niches, it's more prevalent in manga magazines but most anime come from manga anyway
>>
Most of anime appeals to the lowest common denominator though.

Common is the key word. LCD doesn't just mean bad taste, it means the broad base that appeals to a ton of people. Most of the "pandering" anime you probably complain about have a very specific, niche audience they're angling for.
>>
>>137246162
Nah, I can watch Hollywood shit and it feels "okay I suppose" most of the time. But you want something specific? No can have. You get the standard shit.

Anime?
>you want a harem to be full of fucking frog girls from another dimension while you fight nazis from 5th century Mongolia? HERE'S YOUR EXTREMELY SPECIFIC FANTASY SETTING

>>137246315
It really does and it has its own set of cliches. Especially if you watch mainstream shit. But rarely do you see the kind of deviation from "the official way to tell stories" in Hollywood(or even in most indie films) that you see in anime.
>>
The thing that makes anime great is really cute girls. Name me a single "good" anime that doesn't have cute girls.

Mainstream shit usually is, not to mention Hollywood is an important point of reference.

I'm not that interested in the Nigerian or Indian film industries(impressive as they may be), for example, and neither are most 1st world citizens.

You probably saw 3 Hollywood films in the last year alone no matter where you live, but don't kid yourself, when was the last time you saw a Bollywood or Nollywood one?

"Hollywood" isn't just Transformers and you've watched more Hollywood shit in your lives than you've watched from any other country. Don't kid yourselves. And I'm not even 'murrikan. I've watched fewer domestic movies in my life than Hollywood movies in a few years, and so have you unless you're particularly interested in domestic movies.

>I just realized that the thing that makes anime great is the fact that it doesn't try to appeal to the lowest common denominator, but the fact that it tries to satisfy even the smallest niche.

Those two statements aren't exclusive. Anime regularly appeals to the LCD in ways undreamt of by Hollywood, but it does so by appealing to the very base of highly specific niches, so everyone gets catered to instead of what you have in the west where boardrooms analyze market data and try to appeal to the greatest amount of people by making something so middle-of-the-road it'll get butts in seats no matter what, at the cost of sacrificing artistic value. Anime has something for everyone, even if its shallow and debased. Hollywood just shits out generic shit that the masses love but leaves anyone with more irregular tastes having to sift through more obscure shit to find what they like.

>>137247686
>"Hollywood" isn't just Transformers and you've watched more Hollywood shit in your lives than you've watched from any other country. Don't kid yourselves
Yes, because that's what you watch growing up. Once you develop taste, you usually don't bother with Hollywood movies much, and you certainly don't use them as your point of fucking comparison for different media's creativity.

The weirdest thing about anime nowadays is that the shit that the current fanbase professes to be most into and which the "Cool Japan" movement has latched onto to promote as representative of the best Japanese animation has to offer is actually the most niche ultra late night moe otaku oriented content that is generally frowned upon by the masses in Japan and South East Asia and which by comparison to mainstream "acceptable" day time anime nobody really watches over there. That's the greatest fucked up irony of current "popular anime".

Too make a more simple comparison "popular anime" as we know it is like the equivalent of that cheap peasant class food (according to main landers) most people of means and something resembling good taste would never touch back home but that we know as every day "Chinese Food" in America. Like literally it's poor people food that we mark up to ridiculous extents and market like it's fine cuisine. That's what late night "popular" anime is essentially.

Its like realizing that Princess Tutu was directed by a 30~yo dude and he obviously enjoyed doing so.

Why do people always seem to call LOGH "80s anime" when like a tenth of it was in the 80s? I get that we attribute things to their starting season, but you wouldn't call Golgo a 60s manga.

You've not seen all of those either unless you've been going through that list systematically.

I've seen a lot of them though, especially like Fritz Lang's shit.

Since this is /a/, I'm just gonna say this: No anime can top Metropolis. None of them, not even Planetes(though that one's close IMO).
