My favorites were also RoboCop and Kagari. I just wish we got more of Kagari's backstory.
That's not the reason why it's shit. Pseudo-intellectualism is the main reason it's shit. Watch the Ghost in the Shell series, at least it treats you like a competent adult although that last part why not apply to you regardless.

They just namedrop a bunch of philosophers/give little quotes from them without ever going into their actual ideologies or if these match the characters' ideologies or line up with the previous quotes. They never really take a stand on any of the interesting moral issues of the world, instead being like "Here's something Locke said". It's like someone using big words to sound smart.
Shogo is the absolute worst about it.
