They're much less rooted in WE WUZ DUNGEONS N DRAGONS N SHIEET(what I think of when someone broadly states 'fantasy anime' and posts maou') and stand out as unique settings that aren't just 'generic japanese rpg world but with this twist on the dynamics'. I didn't say anything off. I haven't seen Twelve Kingdoms, but Berserk is not completely dependent on magic and stock fantasy races and character types. They are there in part of course, but it is not the backbone of the world, it is not just 'fantasy rpg world but with this twist'

My guess is because guns are the great equalizer. In the (high) middle ages, there was a warrior nobility because only they could afford the best weapons, the best armor and the best training. Guns had better armor-piercing capabilities than any other weapon seen since (though not perfect, as even Napoleonic cuirassiers wore cuirasses that were deemed bullet proof) which speeded the movement away from feudal armies towards professional standing armies. This more or less made the nobilty a leisure class with nothing going for them other than old titles and privileges. When the French bourgeoise figured that out, they put they abolished the nobility.
