Can't wait to start this. I'm nearly 30 but an anime noob (except for the shonen junk they showed on TV in the late 90s/early00s). Finally caved and decided to watch some anime that I would find appealing. Started with Evangelion, it fucked my shit up bad by basically holding up a mirror to myself. It's been nearly 2 months since watching the series and EoE. I now feel I can move on to something else.
Where Eva seemed to become somewhat of a masterpiece by accident, Lain seems like they were trying to do something different from the start. This is just what I get from it, from what little I know. I hope I enjoy this ride.

Not a lot, at least not anything that wouldn't have been heavily implied. Lain takes a few watches to really get a grip on everything. There's no "big reveal" in the final episode if that's what you're expecting.

Yes it is. Nobody here knows what goes into creation, and it often feels like the people who like the "good" (i.e. academic) anime have no actual idea as to why they are good. They have the nerd mindset where they go "good characters" or "good story" but have no idea what makes a good script good, what goes into a well directed shot etc. Theyd have no idea how to establish a series of themes, especially ones which can be subtle or obtuse in any way.
