KnK still has a great romantic story between the lines, I think it's its strongest aspect and many people ignore it completely. If KnK was talked about as a romance or supernatural drama, it wouldn't be rated that low, but people pay more attention to the action and good guys/bad guys storyline, instead of a tale of bonds.
I agree completely with you about the animation, though. I always insist in these threads that KnK's visuals are greatly under appreciated, and complaining about people that call Ishidate a bad director, but I can't complain about him when he made KnK look that good.
