I just finished reading Monster.
Why does /a/ hate it so much? I really liked the ambiance, the character developments and the general feel of a manga taking place in a western environment.
What part of it didn't you like or you think was grossly overrated?
havent read it, but loved the anime. Pulled off the huge, grand story well. Loved switching focus to numerous main characters. one of my favorite animes.

Not all lives are equal. Tenma deciding to save Johan's life at the end just because he's a doctor and he feels morally obligated to goes against everything his manhunt has been about, and is quite frankly repulsive, considering all the lives Johan erased or ruined, and how little remorse he showed. Johan deserved to die, or at least go to prison for life. In that regard, I would say there isn't as much "character development" as OP says there is, Johan stays a nihilistic asshole until the very end, and Tenma stays the benevolent doctor who can do no wrong.

Johan chose Death and believed people are only equal in Death

This whole show is an allegory of ideologies
It's the battle of the Angel vs the Devil

She still loves him and is even willing to sacrifice her life for him, she changed and redeemed herself throughout the story. More than enough reasons for them to start again.
