The references for the real wotas were subtle and interspersed, and you didn't need to know anything going in to enjoy it. Each of those scenes in the image you linked was the result of two cours of buildup, and by the time you reach it you should be so invested that each has a huge emotional payoff. Watching it live had even more richness because information was released weekly and real events affected some things in the anime.

When she gets hurt and Kanata is about to go on for her, she takes out her anger on the unsuspecting Kanata. Her face later in >>135895809 when she hears Kanata's had the fever of succession belays the deep emotional turmoil she's going through. Even considering once to go ahead and graduate before she's stopped, she maintains her position throughout the entire series, leaving an open question of how Kanata will react to being stuck an understudy for years to come. Each step of this plays out in parts over all 24 episodes, and this isn't the only interaction and development with this much depth in the series.
