Because it's at a sweet spot of popularity and low-quality. There are way worse shows, but the fact that this show has so many fans that praise it as absolutely amazing drives people to want to knock it down a peg.

SAO isn't in anyone's top ten (except for people who have only seen ten or less anime) but that doesn't make it BAD. It's pretty enjoyable all around and its popularity has spawned plenty of side content like some super fun video games.

Isn't the point of having a board dedicated to anime and manga kind of to attract people who hold more than a passing interest for the topics at hand?

I wouldn't call it obsessive--that's what the serious waifufags do, or the people who only watch moe. It's whatever the equivalent to being a cinephile is for anime.

So yes, people have higher standards and expect better things, because they've already seen shows like SAO and seen them done better. So when a literal fuckton of scrubs show up talking about how it's the best thing ever, it gets a little annoying. It's like a highschooler trying to talk about the real world to a grown-adult, or someone with only a highschool degree trying to engage someone with a Master's in an intellectual debate.
