Anime that's about hikomori's became popular because it's something NEETs can empathize with. The writer and artist of Watamoe are both real life Tomoko's. Even Anno still has depression and is a weird fuck. Somethings you can't fix, for example, your Asperger syndrome.
For people like that, a modern brand of anime was made which catered to people who are unable to live a conventionally fulfilling life.
