It's nice how the side characters get some characterization beyond what's relevant to the plot.

It could have been handled better by just showing everything in order, I think he did it like this so he could end the third volume with that cliffhanger. Next chapter is mostly fighting, then the one after that is catching up with the present andbest girl winning.
