The science in 7 explaining the singing was just the characters missing the point. The protodevil victims were drained of their spirit and were in a sort of depression, and Basara's music helped them get out of it over a period of extended exposure. The main Protodevils could not make this on their own until they got the damn songs stuck in their heads, and tried singing themselves.

I nearly dropped this series twice. Once when those Protodeviln revealed that they have an ANTI-FOLD FIELD that they wiped up out of nowhere, and then secondly when they made it look like they killed Gamlin off, and I wasn't going to put up with having the only character I like get murdered
Mainly because I don't like the main character, and the series is pretty crafted around making it that the insanity that he brings to the series THE WEAPON against these goddamnable space alien demons that are seemingly unstoppable.
now, having the main character do things, or be the strongest isn't an alien idea, the issue is that in Macross (or at least in the earlier series), even if you were an ace pilot, you couldn't win the war by yourself, end of story. Instead, everything revolves around his ability to sing. I'm not saying "GRR, MUH GUNS AND MISSILES!", but for fuck's sake, the Protodeviln are nigh-invincible, and can pull out whatever horseshit magic trick out of their bag that they want, and the only thing that works on them is this guy's singing.
The Macross Cannon? Fuck no.
Folding? Fuck no.
Max's genius piloting and diving into the planet, planting a reaction weapon, and escaping in the nick of time? Fuck no, Protodevlin field!

I don't think that sort of drama would have improved the show. Basara is a character with a purity of purpose. He does exactly what he wants to and absolutely nothing else. I think it would hurt the character if it turned out he was a therapist to anyone who needed his help. It would tack on something unnecessary to the character. He's great because he's great at what he does because it's all he does, and all he knows. If he does something else, like communicate with people like a normal human being, it would weaken him in my eyes and make him less distinctive.

If he's a static character, he doesn't have to change, things just needs to be written that the message that he's trying to get across helps the other characters more than hardly. Outside of Fire Bomber fans, everyone thought he was a annoyance until it turns out that the magical enemy nobody can defeat can be stopped by him.
I can't think of one character that had been helped by his philosophy in life outside of the Anima Spirita bit. That's my problem.
My issue is that a lot of him being in the center stage relied a lot on convenience of the plot and setting. Instead this weird guy that's seeing life on another plane, and other people learning from him while he's just being himself, he just gets to be a hippie and the center of the universe at the same time.
Besides that, the show had drama in it anyway, so why not put more utility into this character?

Throwing in my shitty opinion with the rest. Macross Delta sucked. I like anime and still watch it because you can't tell the same type stories in it that you can with real life actors, since it comes across as goofy and stupid.
However, Macross Delta is too goofy and stupid, even for my high tolerance. You have girls singing and dancing while getting shot at by military robots as they use their invincible mini droids to shield them.
Yet why not use those same mini droids on the military class valkyries, why do the valkyries need to engage their enemies in melee when they have guns and missiles, why are the girls singing in the danger zone if their sound waves can cross galaxies as was the case in Frontier, why do the valkyries need to dance along to the music, why are the zentradi green some times then not the others?
It's all so god damn fucking stupid. I can turn off my mind to enjoy dumb shit from time to time, but this is asking me to go full retard and not ask any questions. Singing in Macross to me was the side quest, not the bulk of the reason why I would watch it. Macross is about war and the military, not about singing and dancing. As a series it leans one way (Plus, Zero, Dimensional Fortress) then it goes ham to the wall the other way (Frontier, 7, Delta) other times.
I just have to endure this shit and hope the next cycle sticks to what made it great.

I want my space exploration, mechanical crews, G-forces, ammunition grades, civilian casualties, war never changes and all that jazz. I love that and that aspect is what drew me to Macross.
