Minus the buzzwords and edge throwing I would just say it's the anime that did a good job of appealing to the west. Before the anime barely anyone knew what it was. Thanks to the anime turning 50 chapters into 12 rushed episodes you get less dialogue and more shounen like action each episode. The manga is mostly dialogue with some action until way later in the series. The anime attracted people, the ending of the anime along with Kaneki getting "killed " in the manga also attracted people. Tumblr now loves TG along with animefags now and the tokyo ghoul fan base even on /a/ is terrible. This is a bait since this question have just been asked in the TG thread but it doesn't even matter now. I love the manga but I hate the people who read it thanks to the cancer it attracts now.

In the original series, I think I liked the mild philosophical questions it asked about what it must have been like to actually grow up as a ghoul in a society of humans. I thought that the shonen aspects were handled decently, with some interesting mechanics for combat. But I felt like the narrative was a little lacking.
