What's the worst scanlation group/job you've ever seen?
Have you ever dropped a manga or anime because of how bad a job the group managing its release did or similar reasons?
>>
One of the inhouse groups for some aggregation site. They were almost certainly machine translated (and completely incomprehensible), full of watermarks and nuked all detail.
>>
>>135488973
Jaimimi's Box picking up a series is a valid reason to drop it as far as I'm concerned. Worst of all time would have to be KMS/Nekyou, they've mostly stopped releasing, thank God.
>>
>>135488973
>What's the worst scanlation group/job you've ever seen?

bebe@xiu shoujo (pure scum), Kuu Scans (a tons of notes like: "lol, xD, so funny!") and saintseiya-zonev2 (a lot and I mean A LOT of watermarks).

>Have you ever dropped a manga or anime because of how bad a job the group managing its release did or similar reasons?

I dropped Berserk in spanish because it was a disaster. Restart the serie from Dark Horse scans.
>>
I'm reading Detective Conan right now, and the scans from around volume 20 onward have been terrible.
>>
I forget which scanlation group it was, but they were seriously pissed off at sites other than batoto stealing their scanlations so they put giant watermarks in the center-rightish of literally every single page.
It was only a few chapters, but it was seriously annoying.
>>
>>135490230
I was reading... Btooom? a couple of months ago and two entirely chapters has this shit. Annoying as hell.
>>
From the recent ones, Kami Translation. Avoid like plague.

Yeah I saw this on Btooom too, it was disgusting. Literally a CWC level of autism and made it near unreadable while they threw a fucking fit.

I've heard some of the people involved call it "their manga" or "their series".
>>

Too bad a lot of old series are still like this.
>>
>>135491999
Fansubbing only consists of overlaying subtitles on top. Scanlators (who actually have to do a good job) have to remove the original text or redraw shit from garbage scans which isn't always trivial. Especially when you want to do a good job. Basically they're trying to reverse a part of an irreversible process.

Though, about scanlation.
Never trust the translations 100% (though this should be obvious). Chances that the translator actually doesn't know Japanese is higher than you think, and these translators are there for e-peen and just machine-translate and then "contextually re-interpret" the line. This happens all the fucking time, though the method guarantees 60-70% accuracy, if they're actually fluent in English as well.

There's a shit ton of reasons why people get assblasted over someone else "stealing" a series. First usually being the other group doing a shit job, or even the reverse, they're getting shown up that they actually don't know Japanese.
Second are people being afraid of e-peen being diverted elsewhere.
Third is just it's a waste of time and effort to have two people doing the same thing.
Out of these, I feel only the third is acceptable, but it's kind of annoying when a larger group (like niggerstream) ends up picking up a series and bleaching/destroying the pages for the sake of time.
>>
My scanlation group (well, not a group since it's just me) is the worst. When I started I knew basically no Japanese, all my "scans" are made with a potato-quality camera and edited in GIMP. Good thing I only release stuff nobody cares about.

That's not too surprising.

The thing that depresses me is that in high school I wasn't even really a weeaboo- I was someone whose primary exposure to anime was late night SciFi airings of Akira and shit.

I took 4 years of Japanese in high school (literally just because I thought German and Spanish were boring choices) and my teacher was a guy who was a Mormon missionary in Japan for over 15 years. He often lamented how insanely shitty subtitles were- even from the supposed legends of the business (see: that one Otaking 'documentary' about how bad fansubs are).

He had us watch a handful of anime, Kurosawa movies, etc. as we learned and he'd pause and break down inaccuracies in subs and so on. Like, fansubs literally would just make shit up. Meanwhile, official subs would completely miss cultural context and frequently were at best insanely dry and literal and at worst completely wrong. He watched just the worst shit however- like one of the anime we watched a lot of was Haunted Junction. Blarghh

I wish I wasn't such a lazy bitch then. I should've just stuck with it and learned Japanese. Instead I can just read hiragana/katakana and like at best 100 kanji. My vocabulary is subliterate retard level. I failed my teacher. He was a cool dude too despite being a weirdo mormon guy.

>even from the supposed legends of the business (see: that one Otaking 'documentary' about how bad fansubs are)
What is the documentary *about*, and is he right or wrong? I don't want to listen to 30 minutes of audio analysis only to find out that he comes to the wrong conclusion 25 minutes in.
>>
>>135522110
>>135522828
That's exactly it.
I'm a typesetter, and often I do a proofing run over the lines as I read them in. I'm illiterate in Japanese, but I stumble across a line that just doesn't fit, spin the RAW line through a dictionary, ask a couple buddies (that know moon, but can't be assed) and find it's entirely made up, or only a portion of the word is there, while the rest of the of the line just takes off into its own dimension.
>>
>>135523237
Oh man, I remember having to deal with those made up bullshit. Worst thing I ever did was ask for clarification why they translated it like that.
>>
>>135523163

Basically he jerks off the people who originally professionally subbed anime back in the 80's/90's, and while he correctly shits on fansubbers for doing shit like OVERWRITING THE ACTUAL FUCKING CASTS in openings and doing retarded shit with fonts and animations- he complains about not literally translating everything without any explanation or context

his excuse was a single nerd anime whose name escapes me (like Otaku club or something? I can't recall) that had a ton of references to other anime and was originally handled with a fucking paper printout of "this is what this cultural reference is" that you're supposed to read on the side

the guy was basically a defender of insanely dry/literal translations (which my teacher hated) while correctly hating the shit out of fansubs that use such obnoxious fonts and self-aggrandize. Equal measures of wrong and right really.

Like, say- Otaking would consider not literally translating Zoro's "108 Pound Cannon" as exactly that every single time as being a travesty...

...nevermind it makes no fuckign sense contextually to a non Japanese speaker if you translate it every single time or not. It's a weird reference to the 108 earthly desires and a pun that only really works in Japanese. It doesn't fucking matter.
>>
Sorry to ask but do we have an aggregator to replace MT/Madokami yet?
>>

Niggastream.

I still remember when they took Vinland Saga for the first time as Binkitopia. Fucking faggots decided to use Topaz on a series like Vinland Saga that heavily use textured grey tones. Topaz killed the entire art for several months, until Hoz picked up.
>>
>>135522610
Literally everything is edited machine translations now though, people have discovered that you can make money off it.
You could probably count series with real translations on your hands.
>>
>>135523590
Nope.
>>
>>135523496
got it, will watch.
thank you for understanding what I meant and not assuming I was being a bitch
>>
>>135523917

It's cool. It's worth watching because he correctly highlights the worst excesses of fansubbers and correctly explains why sometimes more literal translations are great but he really overemphasizes the literal-ness of translation which was a grave sin to my teacher

like part of understanding another language is understanding the culture and history.

Language is political and historical- it can't be translated without context. context is insanely important and it's important to convey the feelings and intent of the author in the use of language rather than just shit out the most dictionary translation as possible.

Like, I know it's gay as hell but understanding the whole "harmonious" nature of asian culture in general is an important aspect of understanding written word and fiction in any Asian language- regardless if it's something like Tale of the Genji or the absolute shittiest shounen battle anime
>>
>I Am A Hero: We have v17 scanned and I have v18 at home, but our translator hasn’t answered the emails I sent for the last month or so. I sent another one tonight, but if I don’t hear back, I’m unfortunately going to have to find someone else.

>Alice in Hell: Don’t have translations for it, can’t go any further until we do.

For fucks sakes, I like what they do, but they need to get a handle on their stuff. Or someone needs to help them. They have far too many projects and no staff.

my favorite scanner drama is people flipping out because other groups scanlate the same thing

nigger, who cares

is your translation better?

like Fallen Angels and My Hero Academia

like Niggastream was insanely fucking bad- barely graduating to "readable" in their latest

you don't watermark and you explain your stupid translations Fallen Angels, you're gravy with me please never stop

I'll read niggastream when it drops first inevitably, and THEN yours since yours tends to be less fucked up

nothing wrong with that- you're fuckin fine and you don't splatter gay watermarks all over your shit. why do you care

Those who retranslate from another language.

One of the worst I've seen so far went Japanese - Chinese - Spanish - English, and I think some other groups (Italian, Vietnamese) used the English translation.
>>
>>135488973
Theyre not bad in the sense you mean but Norway scans can get downright fucking obnoxious. I can stand an occasional 'Norway!' instead of 'No way!' or a "TL note: 100 yen is something norwegian krone", but when it's on every fucking page or you can't tell what the original message was (like, 'By Odin' or some shit) it's so obnoxious.

Naturally, that's arguably one of the hardest jobs. But chances are if you can clean and redraw a page, you can also properly place text inside of a speech or thought bubble. The only job that's anywhere near as easy as pure typesetting is actually scanning stuff.

I was going to mention null.

I don't actually think they're bad enough to translated Katakana into names like that and "Tandiahjo Lofulamingo". They must have been translating from Chinese raws.

But they still were crap tier. I'm trying to read their Saki translations and there's an incomprehensible mistake on every other page. In pic related, the line is supposed to mean "If she had discarded the 1m on the 8th turn, she would have had ippatsu tsumo".

But the worst part was their incredible elitism. They spent more time complaining about "leechers" than actually scanlating.
>>
>>135539739
>They must have been translating from Chinese raws.

It's obvious just from the scan that was posted. Not a single kana in sight.

Not only do they have psychotic levels of aspergers, they were making a pretty penny off of suckers donations.

They weren't the worst group quality wise, but they were the worst group ethically. Trollscans, graft, huge fucking watermarks, threatening leechers, withholding releases be of shitty grudges, cyberstalking people who made competitive releases, cyberstalking people who accused them of impropriety, begging for $500+ per month in donations, and not releasing anything, the list is fucking endless.

>we complain about stuff we get for free illegally
For two good reasons:
1. If you offered somebody free cake and then fed them dogshit, they'd have a right to be mad even if the dogshit is free.
2. Most people don't like the raw hypocrisy of somebody stealing an artists work and then getting assblasted when aggregator sites do the same to them.
>>
>>135533761
>I don't know the third.
Probably Jaimini's Box, sadly.

So why do even competent scans have frequent non-idiomatic English, broken English, and spelling/homonym/typographic errors out the ass? There are hundreds of millions of fluent English speakers who can proofread your shit in five minutes
>>
>>135542309
Because there isn't such a thing as a competent scan?

Anyone who thinks they've read a manga because they read a translation is completely insane.
>>
>>135542309
Same reason you haven't offered your services to the Hadena-tier scanlation groups of the world, I assume.
>>
>>135542309
Shit groups don't want to be corrected on how shit they are. Just look at the guy who tried to be an editor for Hadena on their subs, they bitched when he fixed their shitty grammar.
>>
>>135540005

they make clean jobs though

also it made hinamatsuri way more funny
>>
>>135542309

People who speak fluent English don't need to learn another language, because it's a lingua franca. You can travel to any country, speak in English and people will understand you. Thus the translators (i.e. those who bothered to learn another language) are almost always non-native English speakers and mostly hang out with other non-native speakers.
>>
>>135542309
Translators tend to be egotistical by nature and think that because they volunteer to contribute to a scanlation effort, they're entitled to be above criticism. Most simply can't stand the idea of someone 'correcting' or questioning the accuracy of their work, or otherwise simply take for granted their competence with english and assume that there's no errors to find and no reason to edit.

Bear in mind that the overwhelming majority of translators are 2nd gen japanese immigrants either looking to turn their home-spoken language to use or looking to reconnect with their parent's culture, or else they're chinese immigrants for whom japanese comes easy because it's relatively close to their own first language. In both cases, they tend to have an unwarranted sense of confidence in their english writing skills while generally having the english language competence of a detroit teenager.
