It was an amazing experience and I'm deliberately avoiding any content for Zero so that I can experience it spoiler-free just like I did with this one.
It made me feel emotionally drained more than once, which I think is high praise for any work of fiction.

What was like when it was airing?
I completely forgot the fact that the original world line had kurisu stabbed when I was watching it. So it was shocking when it was bought up again towards the end when the d-mail was were being erased.

Honestly? They're all meh. Kirusu has a great visual but she's a boring character. Mayuri is cute but at the same time she's just a plot device. Ruka isn't even a girl. Moeka is an autistic whore. Rumiho is cool but could be more relevant. Suzuha is really badass but not very attractive.

I like Suzuha but her role in the story is basically to be a side effect. She's the tangible and present reminder of the future. It makes sense that they went with Kurisu. She receives nearly equal screentime in both the VN and anime as Okabe, is similarly involved with the various events rather than just being along for the ride like most of the FGL members and of course is the other side of the romance arc, which provides both an excuse to focus on a character dynamic people liked and an extremely powerful motivator to explain why she's now messing with time.
I'm not going to even buy into if she's the best choice, but she's certainly the logical one.
