Pff, you know most people are holding out on the idea that 3.0+1.0 is going to fix the rebuilds.
Anno is literally George Lucas and the rebuilds are his SW prequels. I'm sorry to say, but when Anno's life was shit was when he made his most interesting stuff. That's the way it is with certain artists.
Now that he's had a taste of success and is married, that fiery angst is gone. He has already peaked, at this point he just wants to pass the torch and see a new generation of creators come up in the industry before it dies.
That kinda explains the rebuilds desu. He is attempting to keep the industry alive by rehashing his most profound work to pander to obsessed fans. At the same time, selling god-knows-how much, near Star Wars level of merchandise which he probably thinks will get funneled back into the industry.
