The japs were the ones who wanted them. However after a while they got too much trouble to keep as a pet and were released into the wild. There are several documentaries about this and there are even people whose sole job is to hunt and kill them.

What I don't get is that they wanted them because of the show, but Sterling makes it a goddamn point that Rascal IS a wild animal which is why he let him go.

The reason was because they saw the raccoon as a cute cuddly creature. Now those who are familar with the raccoon know this is not the case at all. Most invasive species are brought for the same reason. They look cool, they are pretty or they are cute. However when they hit the wild they cause a great deal of destruction and havoc because they have no natural predator. Rabbits were brought into Australia for the same reason and they thrived and destroyed most of Australias crops and habitats.
So the thing to pull away from this is look but do not take.
