The author and the JSDF is pro-US. This is why the characters are still using American equipment. You might disagree because you expect Americans to be superheroes who literally run the entire operation, but that shit doesn't fly here. Being pro-US doesn't mean surrendering Japanese sovereignty. The author AND the JSDF are grateful for American help, and will reward Americans accordingly when the time is right. But a line needs to be drawn when it comes to national boarders.

On average, the anime males look better. There are a couple exceptions, but the males usually look better. Most notably Komakado and Itami's government friend. The humanoid women also look better most of the time with a couple of exceptions. Most notably Kuribayashi and Aoi who have better designs in the manga. The monster girls is where they fucked up. They literally decided to go the super moe route and it just makes them horrible. Not to mention like all the women are sticks in this anime.

In this book Japan builds nuclear warheads and ICBMs to deliver them, then sends the JMSDF to invade the Marianas while "accidentally" launching cruise missiles at US aircraft carriers to cripple the Pacific Fleet. Then they used a computer virus to crash the US stock exchange and at the same time had the chairman of the Federal Reserve assassinated.
The end goal of this was that they wanted to ally with China and rebuild the Greater East Asian Co Prosperity Sphere, with China getting Siberia and Japan getting SEA.
This was all in revenge for American consumers losing confidence in Japanese cars after a Honda exploded on the freeway thanks to a defective gas tank, which somehow crashed the whole Japanese economy.
Also the Japanese businessman behind it all is a pervert who kidnaps and rapes blonde American girls.
And at the end of the book a Japan Airlines pilot kamikazes his 747 into the Capitol during a joint session of Congress and kills the whole government.

There is also the fact that the JSDF is annoyed at the guy constantly because he keeps skirting the rules. There is a reason most of the base thought of him when they considered someone insane enough to accept a quest to hunt a dragon.
