Has horror ever really been done well in an anime without resorting to shock value with over-animated gore?

That one episode in Shinsekai Yori when they're investigating the hospital was really suspenseful and intense. Though not straight out horror I guess.

Nope all horror anime are shit

Thinking about it, it's kinda sad that Shinsekai Yori is one of the best examples as of recent of a show with horror elements (the cats, the creeping atmosphere, the rightful legends, etc.)
We really need more horror anime, there's a lot of untapped potential that hasn't been fully explored in terms of weird and creepiness.

SSY was genuinely unsettling. I still think it's the only anime that has done horror well.
I think Mouryou no Hako fits the bill in a way. Literally madhouse's best anime but it's based off of a mystery novel so no one has seen it but people who like slow burns.

Fuck..
*frightful legends
There were a few scenes in Mouryou no Hako that legitimately freaked me out, but I would say it's more mystery than horror.

I thought Ghost Hunt had some pretty good scenes.

Ghost Slide was pretty horrifying.

Ghost Hunt was fine for the usual paranormal horror. I just wish it kept going because the group only felt truly "unified" when the series was at its end.
