For being an arrogant dick at the end of Z. He gets a free power up and then thinks he is hot shit and fails miserably. Seeing Gotenks Buu kick his ass was fantastic.
Then this dumbass thinks that his power will retain itself and so he doesn't train. What happens? Shitty first form Frieza actually lands a punch to his stomach. Fuck Gohan, he is beyond saving.

Passing the torch really is an archaic way of thinking though, if anything every generation should earn its own merit.
Goku didn't exactly have the torch passed on to him. Why should his kid have a handicap? Things like legacy if anything backhand the younger since it's saying they can't be anything on their own, they're only as important as their predecessor.
Admittedly two saiyans being the center of the universe is a problem though, they were never that influential or important and suddenly they just are.
The kid size thing is clearly just a staple of Toriyama though and a way for him to draw and use the kind of carefree youthful characters he seems to prefer.
Gohan doesn't train unless somebody makes him, and that's the problem. He didn't train after namek when Goku was in space, he didn't train after Cell, and he didn't train after Buu. He only trained for the tournament because Goku said that he was coming back. When the danger is gone he just goes back to hitting the books.
Getting stupid high power ups just because he got mad wouldn't save him forever. Yeah he got his whole "mystic" mode but what good is that if he doesn't train to stay in shape? Him having potential is pointless if he doesn't attempt to reach it on his own

Why does no one get how strong Frieza is?
SSG/super cyan makes all past forms look like a complete joke, and golden frieza was at least somewhat close to the god forms.
Why would gohan, weak from lack of training, ever have a chance against something far beyond him when he was at his peak?

Which stunted his character growth in my opinion.
To clarify what I meant about Goku not exactly having the torch passed onto him, what makes him work is that he can learn from someone like Roshi or Kai or whoever while still being his own person. He isn't just X's pupil or son. Even when Raditz and Vegeta tell him he's a Saiyan he just keeps being Goku. He doesn't even have to tell people he's not like his father like Gohan does, he just isn't and everyone knows. IBardock's character in fact was changed more to fit Goku.
Gohan was better off constantly evolving his own identity under different teachers and mentors regardless how it reflects to subbing for his dad, ironically just like his dad. So that's the one aspect the two shared in common I think was fine.
The difference is Goku's ultimate growth was always an unknown allowing him to exceed expectations constantly, Gohan's was always just a question of whether he'll be as strong as, stronger or weaker than Goku.
When he had to achieve SSJ and SSJ2 and perform the Kamehameha (treated very different from when Goku learned it mind) and put on the orange gi and so on it just meant he had nowhere else to go once he did, so he stagnated. Those scenes were probably very meaningful for Goku fans, but they were actively stripping Gohan of any personality. It didn't matter if he went mystic or whatever later, the character stopped being important because one the torch was passed that was the end of his major character arc. No more unknown to explore. Back to Goku and Vegeta who were written to still have much more to achieve.
When Gohan put on Piccolo and the Saiyan uniform in comparison it was equal parts an indicator of his progress while also being something he'd move beyond eventually.
That sort of thing is more important for a character than receiving any legacy like a hand-me-down. Further, compare him to Piccolo and Vegeta who became someone beyond the shadow of their father.

It's not so much that. He had no chance against Frieza and that was expected. That fight showed not only Frieza's strength, but the consequences of Gohan not training. They were going somewhere with that.
The thing Gohan fans should be mad about, is the manga going so far out of it's way to get rid of Gohan, that he can't even be in the background.
Honestly, I think it would have been cooler if we got to see Frieza's forms being used. Have first form Frieza fight Piccolo and Gohan pretty evenly, have Buu fight 2nd form, and have 3rd form kick everyone's shit in before Goku shows up.
