Foreign policy has nothing to do with that or with the use of corn syrup in sodas. You're confusing interventionism with protectionism. The farming subsidies actually harm the market by encouraging a controlled output and discouraging natural growth and stabilization at maximum sustainable levels. Such heavy interventionism can be justified in certain situations but it's really hard to do so when the result is a decline in the quality of the goods produced, especially when prices are already naturally low enough that they don't really need to be protected. Hell, if nothing else they're also part of what is making America so fat.

Exactly. They were a good thing, and would have done more good as temporary emergency measures. While the region isn't going through a drought and massive crop failure it is quite productive and low prices can be offset by large yields. The mechanization of farming in the modern day makes such subsidies even more obsolete and obstructive to a healthy agricultural market.
With the obesity thing I was referring specifically to the corn syrup though. Rereading what I wrote it does sound like an overstatement.
