That morpheem test posted at the end of the last thread seems accurate at least for me. My vocab is shit and every other test has resulted in numbers way higher than this result.
Don't really buy the estimated numbers needed to read almost any text and communicate well, though. Wager I'd need at least five fold stronger vocab than what I have now to be able to handle most things without looking up every other word.
>>
>>135217255
Putting Davido at the top only makes Japanese seem even more unobtainable. They guy is a master, even more proficient than ケン様 was.

Pretty sure it's 10,000. After I hit that threshold, anything not containing jargon because easy to read without really looking up words.

This might help make sense of that post.
>>
>>135217353
They took that number straight up from the English learning website, so yeah it's truly irrelevant.
>>
>>135217328
You'll be surprised. You'll still be looking lot of common words when you hit 10,000.
>>
>>135217446
Like I said, I already hit that level, so I know how many words I'm looking up, and it's not much at all, to the point where I can read a lot of manga (pic related), VNs, etc, without even needing a dictionary.

Like I said though, jargon (common words or not) messes me up. Luckily, not a lot of it in the average line of text.
>>

It gave me 16k when I only have 6.7k cards in anki

The deck still has typos that need fixing and I'd rather there not be any typos at all (no matter how minor or infrequent) on my first read through it, but I agree that the deck is better for actual studying / reviewing. I basically intend to use the actual DoJG for learning and the deck for reviewing and physical copies are nicer to read than scans. Aside from a kindle, I can't really think of anything else worth buyfagging for learning Japanese aside from reading material.

How exactly do japanese kids learn kanji? I know they have a fixed number of grade kanji but what exactly do they learn there? All the readings for the kanji? Common 2 kanji compound words? The general meaning?
>>
>>135220479
I imagine just being exposed constantly to kanji throughout their lives will make it necessary to at least passively if not actively remember most of them.

If you spent a year in japan you'd probably gain the same kind of intuition for it i'd bet.

>The deck still has typos that need fixing
So post them? We've been calling for people to post typos and errors for months and months now. Do you really expect one person to be able to spot everything? The entire project would be finished by now if people bothered to pipe up when they came across something instead of making random comments here and there which will never be found by the one anon handling everything. There is now a second page set up exactly for people to report these things on the front of the djt web page.
Anon in charge of the homepage must wonder why bother doing stuff like that if no one uses it. When you think about it, even fifty different anons using the deck and taking note of little typos and stuff they find, then posting it; the entire thing would be proof read multiple times with a fraction of the effort required.

It's valid criticism; DJT has had two projects for editing now and over the months there was one anon beside the anon working on it and currently by the looks of it another anon who posted a couple recently. If the criticism doesn't apply to you, then don't take it personally, but it needs to be fucking heard. Telling people to chill out is all well and good but it doesn't change the fact that this entire thread/general is basically the sum product of maybe four or five anons doing a lot of fucking around and if they fucked off, everything would crumble, fucking over all the potential anons looking to leave their EOP ghetto but not far enough to leave the board. DJT has the potential to get anons interested in scanlation and translation as they are getting rather agitated about the current state of placed being shut down and no one to provide. Instead of being another shitty general it could be a tool for creative growth, similar to the scanlation thread that pops up every few days or so.

Sometimes you need to start a fire to get people out of their seats.

What?
That's just an exaggeration.
This is a 4chan thread, not a corporation. It will be just fine if your mythical 4-5 anons (including yourself I imagine?) fucked off. Not being ungrateful for the work put forth by various (more than 5) people over the years. Just noting that wow, no way would this thread crumble if they left. At worst, the CoR goes down and we have to re-upload a bunch of resources. Hardly a thread crumbling event. If Yuusha poster stopped making threads, someone would replace him, again, not a thread crumbling event. No idea why you're being so dramatic. And I also don't know why you're still perpetuating the idea that a few Ayn Randian anons do all the work while everyone else is lazy, because I distinctly recall a thread awhile ago where that idea was absolutely blown the fuck out. I enjoyed that thread.

>If the criticism doesn't apply to you, then don't take it personally, but it needs to be fucking heard.
Right, I'm not taking it personally, but blowing up just because you misunderstood/misread my post and then blowing up more when I point out your misunderstanding / assumption isn't necessary. A simple general reminder to people that the page exists instead of ranting about DJT's quality would've been fine. If people don't want to contribute, ranting about it isn't going to get them to contribute.

I will think about the "pillars of DJT", otherwise known as the resources upon which anyone looking to learn Japanese really needs to have (on a general basis, for example I mention kanji decks but I know not everyone uses one).

Core Pillars
- An overall explanation of the language and how it functions (Tae Kim's opening, our guide)
- Anki (incl. Core2k/6k, DOJG, kanji (rtk), and radical decks)
- Grammar guides (incl. Tae Kim, Imabi, DOJG, Japanese the Manga Way, Genki, All About Particles)
- Native Material (manga, anime, vns)
Supporting Pillars
- Jisho (or your JMdict front of choice)
- Google IME
- Texthooker (Chiitrans lite)
- Rikaisama (incl. auto import)
- CDisplayEx/HoneyViewer/Etc (for reading manga)
- Misc resources to pump and dump, use briefly but not regularly (jgram, lang8, japanese stackexchange, google, WWWJDC, koohii, tangorin, kotobank, goo, kanjidamage)

Of all of these, the only thing reliant on DJT is the "overall Japanese guide", and we have a pretty good on of that, and we have an anon remaking it to be more lightweight and generally good. The DOJG deck is more of a koohii thing in the first place, but it also utilized some DJT manpower. Otherwise, I don't really think DJT would crumble if every "creator" left, simply because as seen above all the real pillars of learning Japanese already exist and are hosted on places other than DJT. The CoR is pretty convenient for downloading a lot of things though.
>>135221964
>>135222061
I use the CoR for manga that I can't find on nyaa, it's pretty convenient. IIRC original cor guy got many of the manga from DDL and chinese places so a good portion of it isn't on torrents. Or wasn't, anyway. I also believe the DOJG deck is currently hosted on it which is also convenient. It would also be hella inconvenient if all the mega links of CoR went down, I would think, but then again I don't remember linking resources from it for awhile.

>Anon in charge of the homepage must wonder why bother doing stuff like that if no one uses it.
Fixing/adding links to the homepage doesn't really take much effort. Changing a link takes me about the same amount of time as making the threads if even that much.

The form didn't take me much time to make either. I just put the form there because it's nice and visible on the main page and it's something to let people know about if they mention typos (though I wouldn't do it in such an aggressive / angry way).

I've ran into a problem.

I started using a Radical deck a few days ago.

The deck has recall cards with the English meaning on the front which I have no use for. I had been deleting them as they came up but grew tired of it.

Today I browsed the deck and searched for the recall cards and deleted them. But somehow that also deleted the recognition cards and now I have to start the deck over. Is there any way to remove the recall cards?

This is really frustrating.

>>

It's not like the problems popped up suddenly after the guide was made. I'm guessing as more people presumably learned Japanese, they got 20/20 hindsight.
>>
>>135229307
Because then that's one less thing for autists to argue over. The worst meme on DJT is "whatever method works best for me works best for everyone else and any other method is garbage". I haven't used KD, but still, the mindset is insufferable.

Nobody here has learned Japanese, it's just beginners parroting whatever is the first thing they heard from these threads and roll with it. It also serves them as self-assurance that the method they chose was the "correct" one.

I actually don't recall ever spending money on anything. I started with Tae Kim's guide which was free, + namasensei, and then just dove into native material with Jisho. Not sure if you'd count buying manga or VNs as "spending money on learning Japanese"

Hey /djt/, I've got a little Christmas present for you!

It's 20 hours of audio books and short stories, professionally voiced and complete with fully synchronized subtitles on a simple HTML reading page I've built specially for you, so it works well with Rikai and all that crap. The content has been borrowed from roudokushoujo.com, a commercial recreational app, and reorganized to better suit the learner.

It shows you a wall of text (it had no layout information, sorry) with a little bar that highlights the current line (toggle with [h]ighlight) and automatically keeps it in view (toggle with [a]utoscroll). You can replay a line by pressing return and toggle play/pause by pressing space. The top/down arrow keys move you to the previous/next line and the left/right keys do it 10 lines at a time for faster access when you're in a hurry! It remembers the line you left off when you close your browser and it comes with two stylesheets to better suit your style, a bright one for summer time and a dark one for night hours. The dark one is the default.

The content I generated this from had its bugs and some lines are blatantly missing (Tokikake confirmed for 57 missing lines, Tetsudou no Yoru misses 49) and synchronization in Tentsudou is sometimes a bit off too (again, the raw data is to blame). I have no idea if this thing works on smartphones at all, since I don't own such a device and cross browser compatibility might be an issue too, I'm not really a web-guy and don't care for being one. Anyway, use Firefox when in doubt.

It's really the tool I wished for a long time, hopefully you can put it to some use too!

It's meant to be downloaded for offline use btw.

Wouldn't it be crazy if there was some global mobile network that all humans can connect to, and the "unknown" portions of the human brain were actually just a really fancy network adapter? But then the network went down and never came back up. And after thousands of years we've come to believe we are fully functioning humans when we're really just like smartphones with no service.

Sure would make for a great novel wouldn't it.

I'm now learning about the wonderful world of verb conjugations! 2 hours spent on WWWJDIC and google trying to figure out what the fuck だが何かはあったみたい だね means, only to figure out that 有る and 会う have the same damn past tense conjugation. Rikaikun and KanjiTomo only showed me the definition of 会う for some damn reason.

I'm gonna go read Tae Kim now. Strangely enough I don't really feel discouraged, just kind of feel like I've gained perspective on something.

They just can't into rap. for real it's probably because japanese "accents" aren't as diverse as english, and considering most rap is basically Black American English (evolved from several slave creoles, french from Haitian immigration, a slang that's somewhat accessible but still fairly cryptic if spoken fluently), and these jap rappers can't really compete in terms of freedom of language.

This is probably the best flow I've heard in japanese rap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbzdDD0yrW4

I know there isn't a straight-forward, perfect way to learn Japanese, but I want to ask:

What do I need to be able to read Masada (Dies Irae, Senshinkan) and Muramasa? I've been studying consistently for about 9 months and finished a few straightforward VNs. Recently, I had to drop Fortissimo EXS because the vocabulary was too much for me and I had to look up almost everything by the time I got to the second chuuni fight (It has 16k unique words, according to this frequency analysis I did a few weeks back). As for anki: I did up to 5k and I stopped doing it after about half of a year of intense anking (with something like 40 new words, averaged among a period of 6 months).

Should I keep reading? Are there any other VNs that'll prepare me for Muramasa and Masada's titles? Honestly, Dies Irae is what I want to read the most and I'm willing to exhaust myself as much as I need to get there. I don't want to read it with 20% comprehension and come back and say that I've read it when I clearly didn't understand anything.

Sorry for the blogpost? Would you have any tips DJT? Should I pick up Anki again for the words? Read any particular VNs? Check out some particular grammar textbooks? etc. Thank you.

SAKANAMON

SHISHAMO

LITE

Asobi Seksu
Soutaisei Riron
Number Girl
Uchuu Conbini
Gundam Unicorn OST (esp Disk 3 or 4, IIRC, the one with 8thmob and something along the lines of MOBILE SUIT REMIX or something) (sawano's good but this is his best)

also a bunch of other shit i cant remember. i got my start with jap music when a friend got on skype with me and just linked shit for like 30mins. anime music isnt bad so long as its not awful "original" music. The Fullmetal Alchemist soundtrack is a good example, almost all of it is A++ jrock/jpop

I don't know where you are reading wise but I am a year into it and I can read somewhat basic JRPGs. I can't really pick up on plot and nuances but know somewhat what is going on. I believe that I am learning even when just reading stuff I kind of know because thats how you learn languages.
It is all a grind. Obviously the work comes from looking words up and looking things up you don't know or aren't one hundred percent on but there is still that grind of just getting it into your brain.

Honestly after a while you start to become more confident in yourself and understand which study methods work best for you and what your preferred method of immersion is.

I can only speak from my expierence but don't look at listening or reading as seperate skills but two skills that work tandem together to learn Japanese. There's a bunch of closeminded in terms of studying in my opinion here. There is nothing wrong with writing things out or learning how to produce. I dont know how to write a single kanji but I really should learn how and understanding thats one of my weaknesses I can work on it. I probably won't but recognizing weakness is important.

These are just my opinions after a year of studying really hard.

*what it means

>>
>>135247106
eventually you'll start remembering the most common words, those will become second nature, and you can start guessing context of difficult words from there. It's no guarantee, esp since you aren't immersed in the language, but that's generally how language is mastered.

>>135247380 is more or less correct. even if you don't "feel" like you're learning your subconscious is still doing shit. Although that shouldn't be an excuse to let yourself defocus and glaze over while studying. And maintaining a high level of mental alertness is nice because you make connections much quicker and are able to apply your analytical mind to stuff like grammar. I find that grammar isn't completely awful because I wasted a lot of time watching bad anime as a kid, and kind of picked up a bit of how the sentence structure and conversation works, even though I'm learning purely to read. Plus grammar's just fun in general.

Draw me your favorite kanjis, DJT!

Here are mine (so far), I'm not even sure if I'm allowed to do that with the ⻌ radical in 達, but I really love how it looks, so it will stay that way.

The Japanese use kanji in their art in ways that we most definitely don't use the roman alphabet in ours, so there's obviously some artistic attachment to it, at least.

Calligraphy is one thing, characters are another. Are letters beautiful simply because they're used in poetry? No, they're a means to an end, just like in calligraphy.

But anyway, like I said, it's the "favourite" thing, much like the average English native doesn't have a favourite letter, the average Japanese doesn't have a favourite kanji.

If you are taking the average japanese person as a sample, of course it won't amount to much.
But you can ask people what words they find appealing and, while most will frown upon it at glance, they can pick words they like and dislike after some reflection.

In Japanese, not only words are plenty, but kanjis as well, so it's pretty conceivable that, while our limited pool of 26 letters doesn't bring much to grow attached to, their millions of billions of characters might be enough to evocate aesthetic feelings. Specially being symbolic and self-contained, with some abstract meanings lighting up some connections (like how 休み has a person and a tree).

You are trying to say something's not japanese from a Westerner standpoint, who has no attachment for a bunch of simplified letters.

I believe a Japanese disliking 家 is no different than me saying the word "goggle" sounds disgusting.

I'm pretty convinced you're being retarded on purpose, but oh well.

>>135222171
>Otherwise, I don't really think DJT would crumble if every "creator" left
If the people involved in everything you have mentioned above decided to stop supporting them, remove hosting, etc. the wouldn't be available. The programs would have to be rebuilt and maintained from source forks, and we know that it simply wouldn't happen. DJT is a part of the larger Japanese language learning community and this community, for English learners, is almost entirely supported by the efforts of a small subset of people doing it 'for free'. If Jisho, WWJDIC, Anki servers, etc. decide it is no longer worth the upkeep and they are removed, good luck finding something to replace them.

>>135222381
It doesn't take you much effort now because the effort involved in establishing everything was already done. Taking things for granted and being frustrated when someone points this out reveals weak points of a community. If anything, people should be thankful that there are others willing to place vocal stress to illustrate these weak points so they can be worked on. We have the tools well set up for training and strengthening Japanese but they aren't of much use if there isn't a focus on training and strengthening the integrity and validity of the thread itself. Maybe you are new of have blindspots in memory but when the site was initially adapted and subsequently flagged and removed from hosting servers, the CoR underwent a shift in control to a more dispersed ownership and the Guide, etc. hosting/ownership was a little in the air. This caused an absolute frenzy for a short period and if it wasn't for the systematic method of stabilizing the situation CoR-kun and the few anons who took charge of stuff, it may never have resurfaced.

The more something is established and looked after, the more likely it is to attract the sort of people you want, who make it better and continue this cycle. If this didn't matter, people wouldn't be coming here day after day.

>>135260129
I have backed up just about everything important on my HDD and would re-upload them. Except the newer Core2k/6k deck, my back up version of that is corrupted with the stats error, and the manga, but I don't think that's too important for DJT anyway. You talk a lot about a strong core and whatnot but really I truly do not believe that's really important at all. You really, truly, genuinely are overestimating the relevance of the COR and whatever DJT core you're referring to.

Now, servers in general are definitely valuable. DDLs for resources (not those found in the cor, but in general), hosting for dictionaries, etc. I won't say for a second those are non-essential. However, there's really no need to be... uptight about those? Everything on the internet is reliant on servers. DJT isn't special. It's kind of like... if you're gonna bring those into the equation, why don't you complain about DJT being dependent on a small group of farmers for all our food? "Good luck replacing the megafarms if they went down!" is a much more compelling argument that bringing up the Jisho servers.
>it may never have resurfaced.
Not really would have been a big deal. We were fine before the COR. I was even there when it happened and it was only a problem in the first place because the CoR existed. If it didn't come back up all the important stuff would be reuploaded and there'd be no problem. Except the manga. The only real virtue of the CoR is and always has been the manga.

>trying to portray everything under a particular umbrella as being completely identical, even when there are smaller umbrellas under the larger one

This is an extremely common mistake.

Like the roman alphabet, kanji might belong to a writing system used to project practical ideas, and it is indeed an everyday thing to people who grow up in Japan. However, they're quite a lot larger and more complex than the Roman characters, there's a lot more of them, they hold meanings of a sort by themselves, and they have a different flow about them. In folklore, you'll also see kanji associated with magic, which is another thing that you won't see from the Roman alphabet. Kanji are certainly a different beast than Roman characters.

This difference is reflected in the arts of the two cultures. Generally, English-speaking communities will limit their writing to what's needed to express an idea that needs to be communicated, like a company name and slogan. If they want any additional decoration, they'll look to other symbols and patterns. When they do put writing up as a pure decoration, it'll be a joke or some piece of wisdom. The focal point isn't the characters themselves.

On the flip side, the Japanese write on everything just for the sake of writing on it. You walk into their apartment and just see a plank with some word written on it in big bold kanji. No picture, no phrase, just a fucking word. Why? Because having heavily stylized kanji all over the place is very pleasing to the eye, whether they're going for a sharp modern look or a more classical Japanese look. Many Japanese agree with this themselves.

tl;dr: Is kanji more exotic to Japanese than the Roman alphabet is to an American? No. Does kanji hold more artistic merit your average Japanese than the Roman alphabet holds to your average American? Undoubtedly.
>>
>>135260389

You know, when I visited Japan (didn't speak a word of Japanese back then; I'd like to go back with a fluent grasp on the language), I remember visiting the Shinto shrines. They had a large structure with barrels of alcohol with writing all over them. There were also things like statues with just a single character written on them. It was obvious that they were treating the writing itself as a part of the art of the shrine. Calligraphy and a love of the potential beauty of Chinese characters in the right hands is a major part of oriental history and a respected artistic field, and it showed.

Here's another example: When was the last time you went to a sandwich shop and they just had "sandwich"" written on a lantern? Or hell, let's go for something more celebrated: What about a lantern that says "alcohol" at a bar? Steak? Pasta? Of course not. To the English speaking community, randomly writing "sandwich" on a lantern would be fucking stupid. It has no artistic merit.

The only "evidence" that you've offered to the contrary is that you believe that it's just common sense that OF COURSE the idea that the two writing systems are treated differently by their native cultures must be some kind of crazy foreign delusion. Oh, and you saw some blog that agreed with you. Yes, let's just ignore the clear differences in how Japan interacts with kanji, as well as the extremely different roles that the two writing systems have played in history.

It's not written on a several lanterns around the shop, though. If anything, it's treated as a hindrance to the shop's artistic design. They put it where it's needed to tell people that they serve sandwiches, and nowhere else. That's the difference.

Also, please direct me to the booming community of English calligraphy (I'm sure it exists, but you'll be hard pressed to find people who give a fuck), and show me all of the famous people in the past who have practiced it as a part of making themselves more cultured. This is a big hole in your argument that you can't explain.

Your argument was against people who claim that the Japanese themselves see the characters themselves as being beautiful and holding a lot of artistic merit, more so than the English-speaking community does so with the Roman alphabet. Those were the people that you were arguing against before I stepped in. Your ultimate proposition is that the way that the two cultures see their respective writing systems is more or less the same.

Which doesn't exactly mesh well with the idea of calligraphy, which specifically describes treating writing characters as an art form rather than a plain means of communication, being such a strong cultural influence. If they didn't see the characters as beautiful, they would have turned their artistic focus elsewhere, just like English speakers did. It also doesn't mesh well with the differences in HOW a restaurant in America tells you that they're a BBQ joint vs. how a restaurant in Japan tells you that they're a yakiniku joint. Both use writing to express an idea, but the writing is utilized in very different fashions, as I've demonstrated several times now.
