I'm not quite sure if this is the right board to post this on, but I have begun to learn japanese (well have been learning for about 3 months now) and I have used Hacking Japanese Supercourse/Anki Flash/Japanese Podcast 101. But anyway as I'm learning how the kanji look and their meaning, I realized I have not learned the pronunciation of them, nor was told to. Is that expressly important or can I for-go that and just keep with learning their meanings and such?

>Tldr;
>I have learned the meanings of roughly 1500 kanji (and more to come)
>Should I also learn the pronunciation?
>>

If you try and learn all of the readings aswell your brain will explode, it's much more manageable to learn the readings of kanji through vocabulary
>>
>>135169868
A search shows that it was a thread on /jp/ and he got redirected here by them.
>>
>>135169842
Ah dude, fuck that shit. Come back after the holidays.
>>
>>135169917
Ye, my apologies, I don't often use this site rather than just /soc/ and /x/ I was uncertain where I needed to post this. And I am quite serious.
>>
>>135169842
Try WaniKani. It does everything you're doing now but teaches you relevant pronunciations and words.
>>
>>135169975
Not to mention that it's on sale right now.
>>
>>135169917
God, don't they know we have our own fuck-ups to contend with?

Why can't they go for the old "No, everything is fine, continue doing everything as you are" line?

>>135169952
Everything is fine, just keep on doing whatever amazing course you're on and you'll be fluent in no time. In future, consider mailing your questions on a postcard to the north pole.
>>
>>
>>135169900
I agree with the brain exploding, I feel filled to the brim with all the kanji meanings I've learned so, I'd just have to ascertain their meaning through the kanji themselves? Even if I cannot say what they are? So more a listen rather than speak type of thing? And allow Japanesepodcast to teach me how to speak it persay.
>>
I think I just found something missing from the DOJG and that's quite essential as it's used a lot.

Listen here fuckboi, I came here asking for a simple response. I've made it farther than many of the fucking weebs that try to learn Japanese, and I'm committed. I just wanted to know if all this studying has been for naught. Or if I needed to start over. No need to be a pretentious cunt about it.

>>135169842
You don't need to learn kanji readings. You do need to learn word readings though. Some words are written the same in kanji and are differentiated only by the pronunciation.
>>
>>135170064
I wouldn't mind dropping some more cash on another lesson, but I've already spent 40 on Hacking Japanese Supercourse and have had good results, except for the aforementioned issue I just realized.
>>
>>135170095
I mean ... it's probably not for naught. It'll probably help you remember vocab. You should get on the generic grammar guide + anki core deck asap though. Usual recommendations are Tae Kim, Genki, Jap the Manga Way. I don't think you've read the sticky either, so read the sticky.

>>
>>135170156
Alright, I was planning on starting those after finishing the last 300 or so I have yet to memorize (enough to pass JPL1 or read a newspaper) would it be wise to wait till then to begin the actual speaking?
>>
>>135170095
>I've made it farther than many of the fucking weebs that try to learn Japanese, and I'm committed.
You've もう failed.
>>
>>135170151
>Paying to learn Japanese

Aggghhhh
>>
>>135170095
If you were even slightly "committed", you'd have thought twice before learning arbitrary meanings for 1.5 thousand symbols.

It's not like you actually learnt them anyway, you've probably seen each one once over the last week and figured you can still tell them apart or something.

Try Reddit, it's more your style.
>>
>>135170095
Only silly billies learn kanji separately and not through vocab.
>>
>>135170207
Considering I have a fine job with great pay, 40$ for an edge is absolutely nothing.
>>
>>135170198
>he thinks he'll pass JPL1 with kanji meanings
>>
>>135170242
Doesn't matter if you can afford it, it's the principle
>>
>>135170095
Kanji vs vocab is a meme debate here because we don't have data on how much learning kanji in isolation helps with retaining vocab. However, the following are facts:

1) It's definitely possible to memorize and/or learn vocab without studying their kanji beforehand
2) There is a chance that memorizing kanji in isolation can be more efficient if and only if it makes you spend less time memorizing or learning vocab
3) All native japanese are taught 2136 kanji through public school, and learn several hundred more through natural exposure (including before they graduate).

Make your decision based on that instead of engaging in autistic arguments. Thank you.
>>
>>135170234
Or I spend 3 hours a day reviewing all the previous kanji I have learned? (havent started today) but as yesterday my review consisted of 1635 kanji to review (naturally it didn't go through all of them but reviewed some from all days for the past 3 months)
>>
>>135170095
If I were you, I'd drop the individual kanji learning and start on a core anki deck to get some vocab learnt.
The kanji learning you did will probably somewhat help you with this.

Excerpt from Rosario Vampire

>妖怪しか通えぬこの学園の存在を知った人間は殺すのが掟!

This was presented as one continuous sentence. If there was a break between 通えぬ and この it would simply say "Only youkai can enter this school; any human who knows about this school are killed!"

But the way this is presented confuses me.
>>
>>135170472
yep. Difference between learning and being taught the most effective way to learn this. Like I said, 40$ is chump change.

In modern Japanese, which two kanji are used for the colours blue and green?
青 has confused me. Surely it's now common to use one kanji for one colour, not one kanji for two.
>>
>>135170517
Forgot to add that the killing thing is a law. Whatever.
>>
>>135170517
I think it's basically
>It's the law that humans who know about the existence of this school, which only youkai can attend, will be killed!
>>
>>135170670
You'll usually see green as 緑
>>
>>135170670
青 is cyan and blue, not green and blue
>>

RTKfag, however, I was only halfway through it when I decided to start Core. I got 800-900 cards into Core at 100 new cards/day when I decided all the kanji I hadn't seen yet were screwing me up and decided to cut new cards/day to 0 while I finished RTK, and in a few weeks once I'm done get back on the Core wagon. Not ever stopping the daily reviews, of course.

Not really a reason. It just is a tool to use on how to conjugate verbs. For example. 知る turns to 知りたい whereas 食べる turns to 食べたい (not 食べりたい).

You don't read and one day magically understand, you have to look up stuff you don't understand, which is studying.

Write 5 characters at a time. ka ki ku ke ko, etc.

Keep going til you can do all of hiragana. Spend a day on each set of 5 maybe. Write them all out. Then do katakana.

I find Heisig's memory tools for the kana helped amazingly. Read Heisig's remembering the Kana.

No, you're right, we should all learn Swahili so we can communicate with the locals during our Peace Corps service, and then afterwards go home and only read Swahili children's books.

Eh, you can frame it negatively like that if you want. I frame it as actually dedicating time and effort to something I'm really passionate about. Nothing wrong with that, certainly nothing that would make me rethink anything. I'm glad I learned Japanese and I reap the benefits every day. I love being able to watch raw anime, or read any manga I want without waiting for scans, or even just pick up a Japanese novel and read it.

Japanese sentences are structured VERY differently from English sentences. It's not just about learning a new vocabulary -- you actually have to develop a new way of thinking. So I just read something and there's one part I don't understand. What's being said in the bottom left panel here? This guy's been getting a bunch of love letters and a girl said that they'd probably stop if his stalker saw him with a girlfriend, so they did dirty things in public. Then this page happens. He seems to start to say that they don't have to keep it up, she gets upset. She calms down and he says... whatever he says in the bottom left panel. Something about not having a girlfriend? Well, that can't be right, he says 彼女役. And the なれないかなって I'm not sure of either. なれない is not used to, but I'm not sure of かなって. Could someone help me out with this panel?

Well tried asking this last thread but no one knew.

How would I go about saying,"I hope X did/didn't happen" when the event is in the past but you don't know the outcome. E.g. "I hope it didn't rain on your way here". I'd guess 雨が降らなかったといいです but apparently that's not grammatical, and doesn't seem to be much なかったといい from google. And 雨が降らなかったらいいです as the -たら conditional form doesn't seem to convey tense, and if I go 雨が降らなかったら良かった that expresses regret at something that did happen.

So how the dick do I do it?
>>
>>135196768

Outside of the common route, most of it is compelling. I'm 100% sure Suzuno is going to get compelling, but I need to push through to get to that point. But I can't because I'm weak.

How do I actually start beginning to understanding meaning? I'm a very basic beginner.

I have katakana and hiragana comitted to memory. I can sound out sentences and words and have them be accurate, but I don't know how the hell I can extract meaning from them.

I'll look at a sentence and think "oh look, they're declaring something."

or

>"they're saying a given thing is false in a semi-polite way"
>"they're saying something referring to themselves"

But I have zero clue on the specifics. That's just what I picked up from Tae Kim and the Manga Way. It feels like something's not clicking.

What helped for you guys?

Anyway, do you or anyone else have experience taking advantage of 楽天s 450円 discount for new users? This one:
http://books.rakuten.co.jp/event/e-book/camp-debut-couponget/?scid=wi_kbo_search_content_new

Setting up their kobo desktop DRM now to download ヤマノススメ第02巻; looking to rip it. Setting up details for every account must be a pain. An anon a while back from the scanlation thread downloaded a whole bunch of manga, taking advantage of the discount, using a fucking swathe of throw away accounts. Any way to do this easier?

Look on the bright side.

Somewhere, probably not far from you, some guy was absolutely miserable appeasing his girlfriend on Christmas Eve. It was cold outside, her parents are obnoxious ultra far-right Bible thumpers that he just can't get along with, and the festivities were really boring. Yet, he had to suck it up and pretend like he was having fun and totally didn't want away from the parents, out of the cold, and back to his comfy computer and videogames.

Somewhere else, another guy spent Christmas Eve with his alcoholic wife, who went on yet another rampage around the house, throwing his possessions outside, breaking things, and threatening to run off with the kids and alimony because she's a self-centered cunt who doesn't care about anybody other than herself.

Meanwhile, you were nice and cozy in your room. No crazy bitch, no batshit insane parents, no miserable cold, no boring festivities... just a relaxing visual novel.

Winter is the best time of the year and being alone in the dark snuggled up with a computer and internet connection is the best feeling in the world. Living in a hot nation without any real winter, in the southern hemisphere makes summer and Christmas time in general just complete shit.

A few weeks ago I went to the anime society in my university.
>talking with a few people there

.one guy mentions he's doing Japanese as part of his degree (Japanese and Media, I think).
>He said it was really hard.
>mentioned I was learning for fun and that diving straight into reading helped me a lot
>he shakes his head and says "It's not that easy"
>it is

The next day I went to a Japanese society intermediate class. I was worried it would be too hard but it was just Japanese people and a few westerners sitting around chatting and I could understand most of it.

It feels good, guys.

One is an adjective and the other an adverb.

Well Kobo has gone and completely jewed out their DRM system and I don't know how to break it. The new desktop program breaks the tools which apparently worked with the older version, but even after using an older version via wayback machine, it locks up and forces an update to the latest version before allowing anything to progress past the load up screen.

Anyone know how to get past this? In the scans of ヤマノススメ, for example, 第2巻 is missing from the 1~9 odd volumes floating out there. I'd like to fill this volume shaped gap if possible.

The Last Rep

Tangen had studied Japanese with Sengai since childhood. When he was twenty he wanted to leave Anki behind and try other methods for comparitive study, but Sengai would not permit this. Every time Tangen suggested it, Sengai would give him more reps.

Finally Tangen asked an elder brother to coax permission from Sengai. This the brother did and then reported to Tangen: "It is arranged. I have fixed it for you to start on your reading pilgrimage at once."

Tangen went to Sengai to thank him for his permission. The master answered by giving him more reps.

When Tangen related this to his elder brother the other said: "What is the matter? Sengai has no business giving premission and then changing his mind. I will tell him so." And off he went to see the teacher.

"I did not cancel my permission," said Sengai. "I just wished to give him one last round of reps, for when he returns he will be enlightened and I will not be able to give him reps again."

Nothing beats a lossless quality scan from physical at the end of the day. Would be nice if they scanned them better and didn't downscale them so much, but Japanese businesses are run by jews who don't know how to be good jews.
