I started studying Japanese (as my first foreign language) in 2003. I could always excel in classes in both college and afterward in local adult learning classes. But as soon as soon as I had to actually try having a conversation with a Japanese person, I just couldn't do it. The closest I got was spending two months in Tokyo with the sole purpose of learning Japanese. I made more progress in those two months 10 years ago than I ever made in months/ years of classes here in the u.s. Problem is, I can't make a trip like that again in the forseeable future.
What's the best advice for getting close to that kind of immersion while being stuck in Pennsylvania? I'm really not the biggest anime fan, but is that my best bet for listening comprehension?
I should have at least passed the JLPT 3 with the content I've digested and practiced over the years, but never got there. Trying to avoid a life regret of not finishing what I started in 2003.

Any tips for writing kanji legibly in standard size writing? I was just learning the word 書く and thinking there's no way you would recognize it unless it's contextual or there is no other kanji that looks anything like it.

Hello everyone, please allow me to use the chance while the thread is still young to shill my endeavors:
So the new DJT guide has finally been started on.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1H8lw5gnep7B_uZAbHLfZPWxJlzpykP5H901y6xEYVsk/edit?usp=sharing
You will find some goals I outlined at the top of the guide, let me know if there's anything you think should be added or changed to these. Hopefully the guide will be able to answer to all of these once it's complete.
Please feel free to leave comments as it develops, any feedback is highly appreciated.
Happy holidays.

Reading a LN (俺の妹) and saving every unknown word. Do you guys treat mined decks in the same regards as something like core, with a limit on new cards a day? Or is there a recommend approach to mined words?

If you do an unstable number of new cards per day then your daily reviews will be ridiculously unstable. This is actually bad for long term retention of mature cards that you rep on days with large review spikes.

It's a little strange I know, I took Japanese for two years in high school and they mostly used romaji and eventually moved onto to kana. From there I kinda stopped studing for a few years but remember all kinds of words and picked up even more from watch anime. But ask me to write them or read them and I fucked.
As such I've had very basic conversations with Japanese people shopping at where I work. But I'm definitely far from fluency and I can only make the simplest of sentences. Like I said though, the grammar isn't proving to be too difficult. But I need to learn kanji!

Hi friends. I've been learning mostly through Anki and through reading. I can understand things pretty well, but when it comes to production I can't think of the simplest things in regards to grammar. For example, I can't think of how to ask "which of the following do you like more?" If I continue going through sources like the DoJG, will things like that be mentioned, or is there something else that will be more useful afterward for actual production in conversations?
>>135148188
Watch a lot of anime/television, it becomes easier to think of what to say when you have real voices in your head. The answer to getting better is always exposing yourself to more Japanese.
>>135148155
>>135148170

That certain euphoria the characters display.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
To my understanding, to speak Japanese naturally you must have it naturally bloom from your brain. If you have to pause and think a lot to construct sentences using DOJG as reference for example, it's likely you'll come out with something awkward, unnatural, or perhaps even wrong, for the most case. See: Lang-8 people spending a long time making journals that end up shitty. So, natural blooming, like how you speak your own language, not really constructing it but instead just naturally having it come out in a linear fashion. To acquire this blooming in Japanese, it's really best to just expose yourself to a lot of correct Japanese, and speak yourself to get used to the process. Corrections aren't even a big deal, necessarily - a corrected sentence is just a single correct sentence, while reading a book exposes you to tens of thousands of correct sentences. I don't think that reading grammar books in an attempt to get better at producing Japanese will really reap much benefit - am I wrong? Just listening and reading should be more than enough in the grammar department. It will take a lot of time to get fluency though, no matter what. If you find yourself struggling to say certain things, reading more is the best option. I just saw someone yesterday say "how would you say something has a low probability" and just now I said 可能性は低い. On a large scale, reading and listening should answer all such questions. Am I wrong?
>>135149079

It clearly says that english speakers typically can't produce the sounds needed to speak japanese in the same manner as a native.
To anyone who speaks more than english this claim sounds ridiculous since most romance languages incorporate the same sounds as are found in japanese.
>>135149688
>or has smoked a lot
Sounds like you are making excuses for being bad

His insult should have been, "must suck having a range of sound outside of Japanese's", rather than "having a limited range", because the latter becomes hardly meaningful in the context of Japanese learning.

It is very hard to give a personalised answer that is of any use to you if I/others aren't sure of exactly what you are doing with those cards. I'll explain by example what I mean.
Pic related is an Anki deck I use for kanji. The top red boxed off area, the front of the card, contains an English keyword with common On and Kun readings. The way in which I remember about the kanji in this deck is by using those front prompts to recall the correct kanji and write it out. The rear of the card has the kanji with stroke order to assess whether or not I remember about that kanji, along with additional bits of information in case I want to study that kanji in other ways. I only write the kanji down once for the card as it appears.

The point of the deck is to learn how to WRITE THE KANJI. The readings, keywords, etc. are merely prompts.

That information isn't useless.

Tell me how sroke count (already on image), Heisig number, frequency, and kanken grade are useful information. You already are skimming over them and not memorizing them, so why even have them on the card? If you're going to be memorizing this many kanji, it would be best to do so using Japanese keywords, not English words - the former is actually helpful and relevant, the latter is just a crutch that hurts you. You've got the right idea having kun and on as prompts, at least, but leaving in the English keyword is probably resulting in you hardly paying attention to them, defeating the purpose. And finally - what exactly do you hope to prove by linking kanken? Kanken is useless shit natives can't even pass. If you want to waste your time learning it, go ahead, but don't imply the knowledge is useful.

>>135154338
- Steve started with Newspapers in Japanese, and most certainly jumps into adult native material, like history books: https://youtu.be/G5IPArDxO40?t=259
- Manga is not necessarily easier than LNs or adult novels. The manga pages this guy >>135111451 keeps posting are in my opinion harder than the average LN line I read. More "emotional" Japanese is way harder than the narrative Japanese so prevalent in LNs, VNs, and adult novels.

The difference between JRPGs and VNs are pretty much negligible in terms of language difficult. They're both thick in text and narrative, or tend to be anyway, to the point where JRPG and VN actually overlap quite frequently and you get VNs that are JRPGs and vice versa.
>>135154395

Take a vocab deck, put kana/definition on front and kanji/kanji compound/kanji+okurigana on back. Use RtK mnemonics to help with short term memory.
That'll actually teach you how to write. Going from 1 keyword -> 1 kanji is somewhat helpful but it won't teach you to write.
>>135154315
>Not at all, there were good points in the posts
No there weren't.
You're wrong, sperg.
Different people have different goals. Saying that those goals are "retarded" doesn't make you right, it makes you insufferable. You'd be 'salty' as well if a group of retards went out of their way to purposefully misrepresent what you were saying and completely derailing a conversation with another person who is trying to get useful feedback. Basically these small group of posters are the problem with these threads: obnoxious spergs who do nothing but look for things to take out of context and ridicule, generally treating /a/ like /b/. There is a reason why people don't post here, and it's because of people like you. I looked through the archives and that shitfest you are referring to was the exact same situation. That one or two anons bringing retards to task are what most people don't do despite wanting to because they know the people on the other end are nothing but meme posting shitposters.
>>135154337
>I was told that since I've read F/SN in English I should try re-reading it Japanese. Is that a good idea?
To go from N2 to N1 you're basically expected to be able to read quickly and from a wide range of material. I think the best thing you can do, if you're up to it, is taking a small collection of different writings: news articles, opinion pieces, short stories, essays, video game dialogue, manga, light novels, VNs, etc. and read them all to get an idea of what your areas of weakness are.
At around the N2 level you're going to be needing to target weakness in order to progress as at around that point most of the grammar and fundamentals of the language are already down pat for the most part. A bit like a sports player, what takes you to the next level isn't general overall improvements and playing games but finding exactly what you aren't good at and working on bringing that up to the same level as the rest of your game. Read wide, narrow in, repeat.

Is "しか" the worst grammar point? I mean I have most of them down, but this one for some reason I can't warp it around my head quickly. I know what it means and how it's used, but I stumble when it comes up. Any tips to get it coded to my brain? ”しかない” is easy, but when its a long ass sentence then out of nowhere "しか -> neg Verb" I stumble, I know that anything after "しか" is negated right?
Tips? or should I just read more and practice with it individually until I get a better grasp?

X しか Verb~ない
しか is a particle that marks X as an exception to the negative verb. The grammar becomes harder to grasp when people translate it into "only" because they make the negative verb positive. Otherwise, there's almost a 1:1 relationship with English's "don't [verb] but/except for [X]"

I think it's more effective if you read through some pages yourself, it should be evident what I'm referring to.
>>135156804
>thinking they are seperate and don't go hand in hand with each other
Honestly one of the dumbest mistakes beginners have is that they think they are completely three different skills that don't correlate with each other.
>>135157214
>I think it's more effective if you read through some pages yourself
I'm familiar with the site; it's at the top of my Japanese bookmarks folder. What I care about is what you think is advanced, since this is a claim you've brought up. My opinion doesn't really help clarify your position, if you know what I'm saying.
>>135157308
I don't have any opinions on what advanced is, because I don't find debating over definitions of words to be very productive; I am merely illuminating the meme with what should be a self-evident example.
>>135157450
>I don't have any opinions on what advanced is
>with what should be a self-evident example
Ergo you clearly do have an opinion on what constitutes advanced in this meme.
How hard is it for you to post it instead of pussyfooting behind insinuation and back-pedalling? Why bring it up in the first place if you don't have the intellectual honesty to clarify your statements?
Here you go: nothing on that site is advanced. Now you can disprove this statement by posting examples of what you think is advanced.
>>135157678
Have you even read the pages or did you just glance over the table of contents?
>>135157716
>Have you even read the pages
Yes, and none of it is any more advanced that what can be found in J-E Japanese grammar guides. Feel free to provide examples to counter this.
>>135157745
Alright, I'll admit, I read through the entire thing over the past 30 minutes - skimming, moreso, really - and realized that in my youth I over-estimated exactly how advanced it was. I'm not backpedalling, I'm admitting I was wrong. There are many pages such as http://www.geocities.jp/niwasaburoo/45hukubun.html that delve into sentence structure, but not advanced as per the meme about J-E. In fact, the J-E meme was mainly defeated by the Imabi "classical Japanese" page which is quite good.
Anyway, the people who say advanced Japanese grammar can't be found in J-E stuff are mainly those who think Advanced Japanese is stuff not even a Japanese native would know, and following that logic it's true that not many J->E guides explore stuff that native Japanese people wouldn't know. My mistaken understanding of the geocities website was that the latter sections delved into that. They still do, just not as "self-evidently" as I thought. So what exactly is Japanese stuff that not even a native would know? Well, I don't really know. But, it's not stuff you'll find in the DOJG.

-たら doesn't convey tense as a conditional despite being based on the past tense form though, that's the problem. There literally doesn't seem to be a past-tense conditional as such, it's expressed via the following verb. But 雨が降らなかったらよかった I believe means it would've been good if it didn't rain (i.e. regret). Still no clue how to express it when you don't know what happened in a past event. Guessing it would be 雨が降らなかったらいい but can't find any confirmation.
