So, now that the dust has settled, what was /a/'s consensus on Owari?
I thought it was pretty damn good, but multiple arcs felt a bit more disjointed than they were in SS.

One thing that never tires me is the formulaic way of closeups shaft does.
Either the camera goes from bottom to top, or from far to close, or many others. My favorite among them being the 'head turns slowly while a high pitched noise plays then cut scene quickly'. I hope this made sense because I should be sleeping now

Owari 1 was great and restored my interest in the series, but the last episode didn't live up to my hype. Owari 2 was good, particularly the last two episodes, but it felt too dragged out overall.

Kanbaru got some excellent ones in the Shinobu Mail arc, to the point where I was taking snapshots (which is something I rarely do).

All the Owari arcs were very strong in terms of plot - arguably stronger than many of those in SS. Sodachi's in particular were refreshing as it's a long time since we've had a new significant character, but it's sorta sad that her story largely exists in isolation within the series. That said, I think a few things in her arcs could have been a bit better explained (although I really enjoyed the /a/ discussions surrounding the circumstances of her mother's death).
Shinobu Mail was quite fantastic, although the pacing was a bit odd (reminded me a lot of Nise in that way). Really highlighted how great a character Kanbaru is though and the interplay with Tsubasa Tiger was very well executed. Gaen's much criticised info dump episode was unfortunate but necessary as far as I'm concerned. Humour was particularly good in this arc.
I felt that the music was a bit lacking overall, but I think that could be more down to my own personal tastes.

Sodachi Riddle and Lost. I enjoyed how each episode ended in an usually fake cliffhanger and had me anxious for the next, and they still didn't disappoint.

I've watched all the other gataris but I haven't made it though the first episode yet. Each new series I see gets more and more like one of those Tarantino "witty dialogue scenes" stretched out over 30+ minutes.

Ougi Formula was a decent arc.
Sodachi Riddle was great, especially the first episode.
Sodachi Lost was absolutely sublime, and Sodachi Lost 02 is probably the second best episode of the entire Monogatari Series.
Shinobu Mail was a bit uneven, but more Kanbaru was a plus; shame there was so much Gaen exposition.
In all, it was a solid season of Monogatari, and I'm sad there isn't much left.

I really liked the first 2 arcs. Sodachi is the best character that's been introduced since Kaiki, and everything about her and her arc hit all of the right buttons with me.
The second half was weaker. The whole arc with Bat's 1st servant felt more like narrative housecleaning than entertainment and I enjoyed it about as much Neko black or the end of Nise.
It was almost as garbage as Nise, except it didn't have a single memorable scene.

Gaen and the general lack of direction lead to Mail being a weak arc. I think the fact that it tried to keep the viewer/reader in the dark and keep the actual goings on as mysterious as possible were part of the problem. It never presented any intriguing intrigue and instead was just a dull and narrow path stumbling through a series of seemingly meaningless encounters and ending in a wall of fucking profoundly uninteresting text by Gaen as she infodumped the entire fucking narrative in a chapter.
The writing in Shinobu Mail was simply weak. The only good part of it was the phone conversation between Koyomi and Hitagi.

Monogatari has become a shell of its former self. Everything involving Sodachi was hopelessly mediocre and most of the following arc felt like an exercise in self-indulgence and nothing else. Even Monogatari's idiosyncrasy style feels tacked on and hollow. Ougi is a perfect representation of its decline and lack of humanity. Still better than Hana, though.

I've seen the complaints you're talking about I don't know why someone would demand character development when there's already plenty of character exploration. Maybe they didn't drastically change, but we still got to know a whole lot more about them and it was presented in an entertaining way.
Come to think of it, Kabuki had a pretty pivotal bit of character development for Shinobu as its climax as well. So I really can't understand the complaints.

Second Season, for example, has most of it, but Hana is a different release. Third season would contain Tsuki and Owari, but then later we're going to have Owari 3, but that would be a different anime series even though it's part of the same novel series.

Both Onimonogatari and Kabukimonogatari have great high points, like the final episode of Kabuki with Adult Mayoi and the showdown vs. Kisshot, or the final episode of Oni with Mayoi's departure. The problem with those arcs is that the pacing is completely fucked, either due to the way it was written or the way Shaft adapted it, where the obligatory expository dialogue episodes completely kill the pacing, and despite both of those arcs containing a fairly heavy amount of Mayoi, there isn't a lot of the witty banter that makes the show fun.
I liked Neko Shiro because it was a great conclusion to Hanekawa's character arc, and the Hanekawa/Gahara banter is a great source of comedy. Plus it did a good job of portraying the world from another character's point of view, much like Koimonogatari did, and shows that all of the characters are developed well enough that you can have an arc that doesn't revolve around Araragi and still have it be compelling.
I'm not saying that Oni and Kabuki are necessarily bad; they're just kind of a slog to go through on a rewatch.

Hana, Tsuki, and Owari 1 had really obvious goals and meanings, what are you talking about? Nise gets flack because there was a stretch of like 3 episodes or something where Araragi did nothing but have inane conversations with different girls. Hana was always about Kanbaru confronting her old rival, Tsuki was about Araragi turning into a full vampire, and Owari 1 was about Araragi confronting his past mistakes.
Tsuki is maybe the closest of those to what Nise did, since Nisio spend 80 pages meandering around in a bath scene.

I meant clear goals and meaning towards the main story. Owari 1 for example got a lot "why is Araragi helping this new bitch that just left in the end?" and even people recommending to skip everything but the first episode. It was objectively bad overall. Ougi formula was actually nice and gave a false impression that it'd be amazing, mostly because of the kizu trailer at the end, but then it was a downhill after that and everything seemed off, specially the direction. Sodachi arc was unattractive as hell and Shinobu Mail jesus christ Gaen's voice is still ringing inside my head because of all the garbage she kept saying non-spot for 3 episodes straight and it seemed even more pathetic after Araragi defeated the First within 10 seconds using the seal.
