Christmas is the time when the barbarians in Northern Europe used to get together to feast in a celebration called Yule.
Later, when Christianity became popular, the officials decided to put Jesus' birthday on this occasion to get people to celebrate it without changing anything about their customs.
At some point, when the poor people realized that the rich guys were all eating really nice stuff on this event (pork), they decided to eat bird (because it was more affordable than the pig).
Later again, the Americans mixed up a few old European Christmas figures and turned them into one strange creature called many names, but most prominently Santa Claus, who got popularized by Coca Cola.
Now they're laughing at the Japanese for getting these traditions wrong.
