2012's The Woman Called Fujiko Mine's not a bad place to start, but it is kind of divisive since it was pretty much the darkest Lupin(both thematically and literally, given the art style) since '97's Island of Assassins movie, and the focus on Fujiko, being the titular character and all.
If you don't find it to your tastes, I'd at least try to get to the fifth episode, which most people tend to really like, before trying out a different series or just skipping to Daisuke Jigen's Gravestone which is thematically similar and may or may not be a continuation of the series, but mostly just focuses on Lupin and Jigen's burgeoning partnership.

That season is not really that dark. A little bit poignant and has an overarching story, but as most have pointed out, Lupin is episodic in nature, you can start anywhere you want with it.

I think it was compared to SW because Miyazaki is considered to be the japanese Walt Disney. The 1st Disney animated movie was SW whereas Miyazaki's 1st movie was Castle of Cagliostro. It's pretty fitting if you ask me.

Because those manga were based on literature/life experiences/movies/etc that the author liked. Whereas anime since the 80s has been mainly influenced by other anime, which overtime caused everything to be highly cliche and derivative to the point that people seriously believe twisting those tropes to be innovative instead of ditching them altogether.
