It is certainly a cheap way to extend the story but it was definitely needed because of how full retard the ant arc went in terms of power levels and threat.
The HxH world still has so much more to offer us in terms of exploration and stories that needed to be told. Compare how empty it feels to something like one piece. Togashi went from the low 40s in terms of power levels right up to 100 with the CA arc with barely any story told so he had to change the scales again. Now we can look forward to not getting to learn about the lvl1000s - but at least they are there. Also i do not mean power level wankery, i just mean it feels like we skipped a few chapters before we got right into the elite level dudes doing shit.
Also fuck that notion of everything ending even more now that i think about it because the election arc is fucking fantastic and all of the political shenanigans is also great. An isolated spike for a select few characters does not affect the overall power scale, and it was literally resolved with a cheap nuke to point out how irrelevant their powers are in the grand scheme of things. Gon's powerup was also negated by a complete reset of his powers. The MC's strength relative to the rest of the world is still consistently low, it's even more evident because we finally met some more hunter peers to compare them to. The enemies they've encountered in previous arcs are still as threatening as they always were, and are still significantly stronger. The DC arc doesn't change or fix anything because nothing has changed except Gon being even less powerful.
