The anime has been pretty good so far. The pacing's felt a little off, but it tried to do a lot so I can forgive it.

The problem is the wasted potential, there's so much crazy chuuni shit that happens in the later novels that would be great to see on screen, and the voices and OST are perfect.
Then again, given the fact that the director is such a hack that he somehow managed to make an overclocked shapeshifting magical swordfight with a railgun-armed robotic King Arthur and the ghosts of the Knights of the Round Table to be boring, it might be better that they never get there if they aren't going to change directors.

Well, that ending was extremely unsatisfying.

Why did we even get Orochi and Kana
SL didn't find a way
They cut out everything about what God Hunter form was even about, made Orochi and Kana pointless, had Takeru beat Haunted with some weird asspull and messed up Kiseki's character.
How is this saving her at all? Isn't she just going back to her cell to get tortured again? Why did Orochi decide to abort the mission?
How could you hate such a happy ending?

Because it's clear that nothing makes any fucking sense, God Hunter was underwhelming and treated as a simple powerup instead of Takeru signing his soul away only to reject Lapis right afterwards, Kiseki's character was trashed (why doesn't she want oniichan to die with her?), Orochi and Kana leave for no reason, literally nothing about this ending makes any sense.
Holy shit they might as well have just left it an open ending with Takeru and Mari captured by Valhalla, the rest of the 35th hauled off for questioning, and Kiseki goes off to her VR dungeon. It would have been about as satisfying.

The only thing I liked about God Hunter here was Takeru's hair turning blue, and Lapis never saying a word. It was the only implication that they'd fused into one being.

I'd say it is, where the novels are at the moment is still at the conclusion of a major arc so it's not like it's left all the plot threads hanging.
In an ideal reality the anime might have gotten some translator anon interested in it who is willing to pastebin translations or something but we live in an imperfect world.

I would say that Rakudai and Asterisk started the same. Rakudai got more interesting because of the fights and Asterisk managed to get more boring.
You can say that Asterisk's harem is better than Rakudai, since Rakudai barely gives any kind of relevance to them, but Rakudai is way more interesting to watch.

I read vol. 5 for the first time just recently.
It was all so depressing. I can understand why they did it this way, but it doesn't stop it from being sad. Since they chose the single cour path, they would not be able to make a satisfying conclusion no matter how they approached the continuity.
The story picks up right after vol. 5, which is also the ending point of the adaptation. Even if they went for two well-paced, faithful cours, it still would not feel right. Oh, the despair.
I should stop watching adaptations.

But now that I think about it you're right, there was nothing else about Rakudai so if you watched it for the fights I guess that's ok.

They could have adapted it much better, that much is certain, but if they decided to end it on vol. 5 while adapting it faithfully, it would either end with Takeru just being kidnapped or him waking up and seeing the magic academy. Neither are good conclusions to an anime that has a 0% chance of a second season.
The only good way to end would beTakeru and Kiseki double suicide.

I'm just saying that Rakudai at least managed to deliver good moments. My biggest grip with Asterisk is that it is overall mediocre, and I prefer an anime that has its good and bad moments than an anime that it's overall flat.
Taimadou anime manages to be a good ride all the way except to the last 2 episodes because it has some good moments, average fights but really good characters or at least for a battle fantasy harem.
If I had to rate them it would be: Taimadou 6 or 7/10, Rakudai 6/10 and Asterisk first cour 4/10.

Half way into the Kirin's introduction, watching Asterisk was akin to watching paint dry on a statue while birds occasionally flew by to shit on it. The girls were the birds. And don't even get me started on all the shit that happened after the pool episode because holy fuck that was hard to watch.
Claudia was the only passably interesting character and she, alongside second best Saya, got little to no screentime. Fuck foreshadowing for the next cour. Fuck buildup for the next season. Rakudai at least had this some sort cheesy self-contained plot with Ikki being a honorabu swordsman. Well obviously we blame Kadokawa, but it's kind of a mute point to complain about it since there's nothing we can do about it. The laws regarding the internet are already stupidly vague enough, and there isn't anything out there that protects things like fan-translations. I suppose you could make a fair use argument and bring up the fact that they don't result in lost sales but nobody actually wants to risk a court battle to create a precedent for that.
Since it's their intellectual property, we are pretty much at the mercy to their whims. They are like the Reapers, fan-translators will only exist because they allow it, and they die when they demand it. Which is pretty stupid considering there was an actual study made that showed these translations did not result in any lost sales for them, and instead boosted sales because they generated interest in the series before official localization. But since they are Japanese they ignored that results, and stuck to "piracy is ruining us!" instead of admitting that they are fucking up.
In summation, we're getting fucked over, and there's nothing we can do but take it. No use whining about it, and the best we can do is hope for another translator to pick it up despite the risk.

I happen to have a near complete set of epubs (missing volume 2) which are all made by one guy (zenkichi) and are thus consistent. Volume 2 is from Baka-Tsuki, back when AMA was actually on that site.

There are tons of waifufags in Asterisk threads who only watch/follow the series for the girls they like. That's typical for most harem fanbase. I highly suggest you read them, I went into it not expecting much and I got to say the series really surpassed my expectations.
I was thinking it was going to be all school antics and haremshit but it ended being pretty fantastic. I kind of consider it my 40k of anime right now, really entertaining and actually pretty grimdark when you look past the superficial first appearance.
The comedy moments are also pretty great, but note that they become extremely rare as the novels progress further along.

Huh, I didn't even notice that. Faces are less rounded and the eyes are colored slightly differently. Takeru seems to have the most changes, having more sharp features in the later one.
Always nice seeing an artist evolve his style as a series progresses while being consistent with each other.
One of my issues with Oregairu was that the art in the early volumes clashes so much with the newer ones as the artist improved. Glad it didn't happen with this series since it would dampen my motivation to reread it.

Based on what? Her lack of vocal support and fan activity is close to nil for vast majority of the season. The last two weeks only started to show signs of some fans talking about her, but that's barely comparable to Julis fans support. Take your own advice. Ouka had close to zero discussion about her. Like the only time she had it was when there was Laugh Maker talk that made her relevant. Week 11 and 12 had harem general threads that got derailed and Antimagic discussions. That was also the only time Ouka received serious discussions. In the early starting weeks Ouka had one fan who tried to make her into a down with witches memes against Mari for fun, but that went no where and even he stopped posting about her after the 4th week.
Like it or not, the shitstorms that brood between Julisfags and Stellafags garner the former more serious discussions than what Ouka has. And that happened often.

The last week did. It also coincides with the fact people are giving their final impressions of the season and even some Marifags converted to Oukafags after reading the novels.
