She makes sense as a character.
She's spoiled rotten as a rich kid of an upperclass society and gets brought down to level with non-mana users. She goes through that adversity and becomes a stronger person while alienating herself and becoming alone.
Then she meets Tusk at episode 5, and softens up to the point where she actually talks to other characters and becomes a likeable protagonist.
Basically Pre-Episode 5 Ange is a rollercoaster ride of dislike and hate, while Post-Episode 5 Ange reaches love and sometimes dives down into hate. She becomes a much more likeable character after she meets Tusk.

I don't think you understand what people mean when they say they dislike Ange. They aren't just talking about how she is in the first few episodes -- she's intentionally flawed in those.

I don't think the author's intentions for the character were limited to her likability, which is part of why she worked so well. Nobody in that world was really perfect except maybe for Tusk, Ange was perhaps the most inherently flawed; if her name wasn't in the title, I'd have thought Ange was going to be the villain of the series for most of the first episode. Ultimately the show is about more than her redemption from who she was, it's about her independence from that past, and growing into a protagonist even the viewer may never have thought she could live up to.

First half was pretty unconventional and while it could be improved I liked it if only for the fact that characters were acting as despicable as possible to eachother in one huge bitch fit.
Second half is when the "development" started and while that's all good from a storytelling point of view, everything mellowing out showed that it really was just another Sunrise show and nothing particularly interesting happened. I wish Hilda and Ange actually went through with their Mana extermination.

A real life person like that, wouldn't suddenly stop being a self-important asshole for a LONG time. Ange did get better by the end of the series, but still had that pompous attitude which, like it or not, makes sense.
The whole world turned it's back on her, she was like, "fuck you guys then" & held on to that mindset.

It could work, maybe. If the show just kept depicting Ange and Hilda as total cunts you're not supposed to sympathize with and they went on a nihilistic killing spree, this anime might've been intredasting.
