I sometimes forget just what a great job the anime (and official art) captured the idea of Ranma being better at being the height of feminity than her own harem.
I never quite understood what people saw in the other girls and the Tendo sisters (including Akane) seemed to treat her more like the new sister in the house than Akane's future husband (adding to the hilarity).
Then again, that view seems to be in the minority. It may have been because the first chapters I eve saw of the show focused more on girl-Ranma than guy-Ranma so I kinda got the (wrong) impression that they were like twins stuck in a single body (kinda like the Birdy The Mighty deal, two persons sharing a body) and still perceive them that way subconsciously even though they are (supposedly) just male Ranma transforming back and forth.

Look, I have waded through worse and I probably should give it another honest shot but I already considered it "old-timey" in the 90s because a lot of the designs just scream 70s (even if the show was made in the 80s) and the humor out of context didn't hit a chord for me.

The animation gets much better throughout the show. It's especially noticeable once the 2nd director takes over for the show's 2nd half, but even under Oshii the art style clearly changes compared to those early episodes.

At some point any martial artist needs to begin teaching others in order to improve their own art. From that perspective Akane bringing the dojo with her is a huge win. The only problem is that Ranma's insane ability to learn on his own shows no signs of slowing down at series end. This ends up being a huge point in Shampoo's favor since she and Cologne can train Ranma in the rest of their people's style AND give him a place to teach when he's ready.
