All of the arcs aside from CA really build off the previous arc and the Hunters Exam is strong enough on it's own to be good. Even York Shin needs the Heaven's Arena. The only underwhelming arc was the Zoldyck arc but we still got the coin flip sequence so that's nice.

I think it's just taking the logical conclusion to the "Shonen power up". Like in Bleach how Ichigo literally calls upon the power of his hollow form, an incredibly malicious and destructive force, but never really has problems with it outside of it saving his ass in fights. Naruto has a demon inside of him but it doesn't do anything for most of the regular series and most of Shippuden as well but sit there and taunt him when he needs power.
In HxH, Gon activates his shonen action hero powerup and it destroys his body because it's not natural and it is forcing his body to do things it was never meant to do hence the toll it takes on him afterwards. I won't say it's "realistic" but it's a nice subversion of how that moment usually plays out in other shonen series.

Election arc was great imo. Between Exam and Yorkshin/Ants in terms of story, characterization and thrill definitely. It prepares a good setup for DC and resolves some conflicts from Exam/Zoldyck arcs at the same time. Plus both Pariston and Illumi are great villains, much more interesting than Hisoka.

Are you stupid? Togashi already had a plot device for that kind of situation in the form of nen exorcists. Why do you think there's a scene of one of them saying she can't heal Gon? Togashi could just as easily have written her to be able to do it.
Hell there was no reason to have Gon be in such a state in the first place, just losing his nen would still have been a fair deal for his vow. The whole thing was just a way to introduce Alluka and very likely tie it to the DC with the Ais.

The issue wasn't Kaito's death by itself, but the fact that Gon blamed himself and his own perceived weakness for it.

At the very least I think that Togashi wanted to show that Gon wasn't being rational about it, and in the end his power up was basically that, throwing away his future over a little tantrum. If Kaito were there he would called him an idiot, but there wasn't no one to call him on it. Gon lost and dealt with it in the worst possible way.
