I just watched the first episode of One Punch Man and just had my mind fucking blown. I am absolutely floored at the technical mastery that has gone into this show.
The animation level of detail in this show is far above and beyond anything I've seen in a while. Madhouse has outdone themselves in paying insane levels of detail to every single frame where it matters. There are so many little details in the shading and lighting that anybody on a time crunch could imagine throwing out if they were drawing this show. eg. there is a scene where Saitama's bald head reflects the grocery store, like you have to WANT that there to go through such efforts to draw that. Every single cameo, every single nod to other well known superhero anime/show has had the illustration match to its original nearly perfectly (my jaw dropped at pollution man's freeze frame, or the old slow-mo face/neck stretching after receiving a punch), as if the animators and illustrators at Madhouse were doing the 21 gun salute to all of their favorite superhero shows. Every explosion feels satisfying, every punch from Saitama feels like the perfect final concluding punch from every other Shounen superhero anime placed together into one amazing love letter to the genre. I can't help by draw analogies to Jack Black's 'Tribute' song: it is an earnest tribute to all superhero animations that pays its respect by showing immense flattery for the fighting/action tropes that have appeared in the genre before it.
And speaking of rock, the soundtrack for this show is paired perfectly. It is so clear that the music draws from the campy "HARDCORE ADRENALINE FUELED MANLY METAL" soundtracks of yore, and it is so unabashed in doing so. It basically screams, "HEY! REMEMBER WHEN YOU USED TO THINK THIS IS RAD? TRY FEELING THAT AGAIN IT'S FUCKING GREAT."

I finished the first episode, and was so fueled by adrenaline that I got out of bed and went for a FUCKING RUN AT 10 IN THE EVENING, and have come back and still feel like I need to vent about the amazing amounts of ENERGY I have.
I remember when I was a little kid, my friends and I would watch DBZ, and at the end of every episode we would get so worked up, we would go outside and pretend be DBZ heroes. Like we would go and be like "yeah man, LET'S FIGHT, I'M GONNA KAMEHAMEHA YOUR ASS", and just run around and play until we were decked out again, and this first episode of One Punch Man made me feel that again.
Do I expect the show to keep making me feel that way? Not really. But I am majorly impressed that One Punch Man has made me reconnect with with my memories of this superhero shounen genre, and is clearly doing so intentionally.

There is a few things I hate about the Fermi Paradox
1: It assumes that we are in any way relevant.
2: It thinks that aliens would communicate using shitty outdated methods we are looking for or even could gain any sort of use from it.
3: It forget that "now" is sandwiched between billions of year in the past and the infinity of the future. Human history had went by pretty fast all things considered.
Lastly, it can't think about the other reasons they may want to be quiet.

So is this really just another action show? I was really hoping it would get deeper into the characters and stuff. I mean there's not really any drama. Even when he's fighting the alien leader dude, you know from the start he's gonna win. That's the whole point of the show. That last fight wasn't played as comedic or dramatic or anything. It was just another fight that MC was always going to win.
The entire season has just felt like setup for the next season. I could see the show being great if it does some interesting character stuff, but right now there's just nothing going on. I mean the animation is great, and the fights are cool I guess, but there's no emotional investment of any kind.
This wasn't the last episode was it? I really hope there's at least a wrap up episode where something interesting happens.

There is no really valid reason to think they would ever give up the ability to pick up electromagnetic signal. By the rule of evolution, they would most likely develop any tool that allow to pick up any material source. Keep in mind that the base for the swarm was precisely to locate and explore new planrets.

The only parts I really enjoyed were the wacky hijinks of the first half and the end of the sea king arc where he made himself look like an asshole so the other heroes would be appreciated or whatever. That was actually a nice character moment. If season two were more of those things, actually exploring the character, actually playing comedy, then it certainly could be great, and all this setup (the entire alien arc) might be worthwhile.

I was expecting them to have Saitama's inner monologue or whatever, but keeping things silent and showing rather than telling really made the scene a lot better.

The whole thing is meant to be a big gag because the hero can beat everything in one punch, the problem is trying to show how strong the villains are when you have such a protagonist (hence the introduction of other heroes and the drawn out Boros fight). Boros had to be played up a bit more for the anime since they were ending the series on him and had to come to some sort of conclusion, but it really is kind of the exception in the series.
Sadly a lot of the fun characters and shenanigans that make the source material what it is now aren't introduced until just after the Boros fight (The overall story structure had to change a bit as the Boros fight is the logical conclusion of the whole one punch thing), and those are left out of the anime.
A lot of anime-only content was inserted in order to make this episode feel more like a conclusion, but really the anime is only adapting a chunk of the source material and season 2 will likely never happen, so you will be left with an incomplete story nonetheless if you decide not to view the source material.

Which is really too bad because despite being played like a gag it's actually pretty good observation on how terribly prisoners are treated. Pri pri's justification of "well if it happens to criminals it's ok to do" is the exact same line of logic people use when confronted about the terrible conditions in prisons.
Due to the high rate rapes at prisons being sentenced to serve time is like being sentenced to rape. The only difference between Pri pri and a judge is he's actually saying it. I swear prisons have a environment that invites a modest proposal type of essay of simply charging people to go to prisons and rape prisoners instead of allowing prisons the privilege of raping each other FOR FREE.

Agreed. I don't really get involved with this kinda stuff. I only really watched OPM because it seemed like it was a parody / commentary on the genre, which interested me. Hence my original question, "is this really just another action show?"

How so? I explained why I felt it wasn't dramatic. Action isn't inherently dramatic, there have to be stakes. There were no stakes involved because you knew that MC could beat alien dude any time he chose to. Sea King was dramatic because of things that were happening around the fight, and how they impacted MC's character, not because of the fight. This wasn't really the case at all with the alien arc.

I think that if that sort of idea were to be used, it'd probably be more something along the lines of a piece of Boros' body used to power a cyborg death machine. I can't believe I felt bad for a character for being too powerful. That, and the villain. When the battle is over, and Boros says Saitama was a liar for holding back and that he was no match for him in the first place, I really fucking felt for Saitama. He wanted to make Boros feel satisfied by recognizing him after he came in a ship full of dickheads all the way to Earth just for a good promised fight for once in his life, much like what Saitama was looking for. You'd really think Boros was the foe Caped Baldy was looking for but he still had who knows how much more to give in that fight, it's still another dissapointment for him and his life is still boring as fuck. Boros got to feel his own heart engine, his dream come true, but Saitama didn't, it was just another fight he could've won sooner or later anytime he wanted and by the end of it the most powerful adversary he has faced so far was almost dead on the ground while he's still unscratched. Both of them were each other's ultimate obstacle, but he had to lie to Boros and to himself about how much of his power was actually being used in that battle, he lied about how worthy Boros actually was as a foe and Boros knew it. In those last scenes you can feel Saitama's dissapointment like never before.

I was giddy the whole time. The animators and artists really did outdo themselves. I was surprised that they didn't have Saitama's thoughts playing while on the moon, but once i realized that there was no sound i immediately approved of the decision.
Even tho i found the serious punch to be a little underwhelming, that's not saying much considering what happened right before. I'm glad they didn't reuse the punch in the OP and made Saitama serious instead of excited.
Also why doesn't anyone mention Atomic Samurai? His parts made him look like a great guy and a great hero, the atomic slash was just perfect.

I just watched the first episode of One Punch Man and just had my mind fucking blown. The animation level of detail in this show is far above and beyond anything I've seen in a while. There are so many little details in the shading and lighting that anybody on a time crunch could imagine throwing out if they were drawing this show. eg. there is a scene where Saitama's bald head reflects the grocery store, like you have to WANT that there to go through such efforts to draw that. Every single cameo, every single nod to other well known superhero anime/show has had the illustration match to its original nearly perfectly (my jaw dropped at pollution man's freeze frame, or the old slow-mo face/neck stretching after receiving a punch), as if the animators and illustrators at Madhouse were doing the 21 gun salute to all of their favorite superhero shows. Every explosion feels satisfying, every punch from Saitama feels like the perfect final concluding punch from every other Shounen superhero anime placed together into one amazing love letter to the genre. I can't help by draw analogies to Jack Black's 'Tribute' song: it is an earnest tribute to all superhero animations that pays its respect by showing immense flattery for the fighting/action tropes that have appeared in the genre before it.
I finished the first episode, and was so fueled by adrenaline that I got out of bed and went for a FUCKING RUN AT 10 IN THE EVENING, and have come back and still feel like I need to vent about the amazing amounts of ENERGY I have.
I remember when I was a little kid, my friends and I would watch DBZ, and at the end of every episode we would get so worked up, we would go outside and pretend be DBZ heroes. Like we would go and be like "yeah man, LET'S FIGHT, I'M GONNA KAMEHAMEHA YOUR ASS", and just run around and play until we were decked out again, and this first episode of One Punch Man made me feel that again.

That theme playing and that heartbeat synching perfectly with the same sequence in saitama's dream was fucking perfect and a genius move for the anime, it really drives home the parallel between Saitama and Boros and makes the fight all the more tragic.
This was an amazing finale, I'm pleased beyond words. Too bad we're not getting more before I'm old and gray but this is very self contained so I guess it's fine if it ends this way.

Anything in that arc is stupidly sturdy, the main differentiator is wether or not they get one shot by Serious Bang / Tatsumaki, who are the strongest before Garou ascends. I think the Murata padding is just evening out how lopsided the Garou arc was. In ONE's version, the pre-MA part was really short compared to how long and dragged on all the fights of the MA parts were.

Crab dude wasn't really funny either. Mumen Rider was funny one time because of the visual gag of him riding up to the monster dude or whatever on a bicycle, the direction did a great job of underscoring the irony there. Ninja dude was funny that one time because he's like so pleased with how much of a badass he is. It's ironic, and it's an effective parody of a genre trope. I think the point I'm making is that for the most part, I don't find these characters funny. The only character I've found consistently funny is Saitama. I thought some of the alien dudes were funny. Most of the other "theme" hero guys, I literally don't even remember. I didn't find gay dude offensive, I found him unfunny. I found most of the supporting characters unfunny.
