My theory is: with a tsundere you can stretch the build-up of a romantic relationship as long as you need to, and many authors of series where romance is not the main focus probably don't know how to deal with an established couple which engages in fighting evil guys or whatever, and save up the confession for the ending.

I enjoyed it as well. It has a vibe similar to Spice & Wolf so if you liked that then you will probably enjoy it. S2 never though and it really needed it.
