I thought the same, but after watching Haikyuu, Ookiku Furikabutte, and kind of Tsuritama too, I kind of came to appreciate the sports they're based on. Like I thought it'd be boring, but they managed to hype me up for their matches.Plus them being full of cute boys helps too.

Not that I don't think your reasons are invalid, I'm not sure, though. He seems too meek to me, and even if I consider recent chapters, I just do not think he will become stable enough to be able to support, direct and most importantly boost the team's morale. Tsukki on the other hand, has become more serious about volleyball. He has sharp observation, is able to keep calm and think strategically, andin recent chapters he practically directs the team so they can endure Ushi. While he obviously is not the type to effectively raise team's morale with hopeful cliche speeches (that would be Hinata's job, if the manga lasted long enough), he knows how to read people and situation, and who knows by the time they become 3rd years, he will be able to push the exact buttons to keep his team emotionally stable. And because he is a very factual person, never talks nonsense without considering reality, I imagine people to trust him greatly. That’s just my guess, though.

I understand where you are coming from and it is indeed true that Tsukishima has leadership skills which has been proven in the gameby being Karasuno's shield and polar opposite of the guess monster. Also it has been mentioned time and again that a captain must remain level headed for the team to not break apart.
On the other side, we have Yamaguchi who started Volleball on the very bottom of the barrel, who was mroe or less Ttsukki's tag along kid, and who at first acted only as a buffer for the other's abrasive nature. Yet we see him grow, we see him stand up for himself, and gainst Tsukki when he needs a wake up call. We see him owning up to his mistakes and find strength on himself and on his team to keep calm and keep going. He's a team player, and just like a blocker, asuccesfull pinch servermust read the opponent's moves and what could be more advantageous for his own team. This kind of empathy, strategic thinking if added up with a confident personality can become ey points for a great captain. As a second year, he would have another position aside frompinch serverwhich could help his growth.
