As I said, these arcs were not invented at the last minute to make the manga last longer, they were planned from the start. And develop the fights in two or three more chapters don't would ruin the manga. The quick defeat of Houjou is not a surprise. The same happened with Takaoka and his friends, GoF, Asano and Kayano. Again, Matsui writing is the real problem.

Please, stop distorting things, no one here is talking about doing giant arcs, but about doing things a little more tough for the characters. They are almost perfect in everything they do. On the other hand, the enemies are always presented as intelligent and experienced people, but when they fight the class, they behave as useless. In any other manga that would be called power of friendship, in AC is teamwork.

While I'm really glad that the kids used a very methodical, efficient approach to taking down this guy, I do wish that he would've been more of a challenge. I generally like the way this manga does fights, but the outcome is usually very predictable.
Hoping GoF and Shiro don't disappoint.
I'm not sure if I should be mad at him for being a total jobber like almost any other villain of this series, or be amused by how funny the fight was.

a long long time ago, like 20 years ago or so, my brother, who at that time was a bigger anime nerd than me, told me he read that the anime standoffs are inspired by samurai battles, in which they were so polite they would always let their opponents prepare first and monologue. Because once two opponents meet, it would be disrespectful to just attack him when he wasn't prepared.

Though I agree, the Kayano arc was weird. She set up a great plan, and then abandoned it to do a 1 on 1 immediately after failing. It seemed too weak for all the fantastic setup that happened.
