S1 had potential and didn't deliver. It ended up above average but could have been way better.
S2 has fixed almost all the problems S1 had.
As to whether to pick it up, it always comes down to what is on your backlog you would rather watch?
Actually I haven't, I started reading the manga from the chapter where he wakes up after getting kidnapped, its a manga worth reading

In the manga timeline they do happen right after the Bishamon arc. OVA 2 before 1 actually, but that doesn't really make a difference.
