Anime is a visual and audio medium. Such medium require more than just meaning, they require a good execution most of all. It can have all the meaning in the world, but if the execution is shit, it will not be worth anything.

Good story and well-developed characters by themselves mean that probably there's some subsurface meaning in the whole deal. Otherwise the story will fall flat, and the characters won't feel like real humans.

I'm starting to get the sense some of its less hard core shitposting fans have started to get tired of it in recent seasons for that very reason. I've also gotten the sense it does have its share of detractors but they just care so little that they never bother to tune in comment on it.
