The "convulted garbage" portion was never eva's high point. The meat of the show was the depiction of psychological struggles of comming of age that most viewers can relate to. Even if people think that its poorly done or something that is very surface level in terms of psychological depth eva still did it better and more realistic than most other shows

The resolution is final, everyone get's to chose if they want to come back to real life, Rei has fulfilled her purpose in life, Shinji and Asuka have been confronted with their flaws, Gendo confessed his true feelings.
Doesn't help when the giant robot causes you pain, the better you're at piloting it, the more pain is transferred to you with the neural connection. Shinji is actually a very true representation of a 14 year old kid who's been emotionally abused by his family, and is now forced by that same family to pilot a giant abomination of flesh, machine, and his dead mom's soul, that causes him to feel all the pain it feels itself. Of course a 14 year old kid would hesitate to pilot a thing after he felt his bones break, and also his chest being burned by a fucking laser of doom. Shinji does run away, but he ALWAYS comes back, he ALWAYS takes responsibility despite yearning for an easy way out.

Everyone except Spike resolves their backstories before him, and none of them are satisfied. They try to convince Spike to stay and ignore his past because they worry for him and know that going up against a syndicate is basically suicide, but Spike knows he has to go.
He essentially gave up everything for his chance at Vengeance. The other characters understand because they too chased down their past, but they know that he won't be coming back.

It's just really good. From what I remember the MC was like half robot or some shit. Doesnt remember his horrible past and lives a lonely life of trying to figure out what he is. The planet has been taken over by robots which sounds lame but really work (this is coming from someone who hates shows with any robots, mechs, ect). They basically trying to kill all humans. The MC makes friends along the way that helps him become human emotionally, While protecting them from these machines. It's quite beautiful. It's badass as fuck how he rekts these robots. It's also gorgeous visually.
Just watch it. you wont be disappointed. Subbed was good, but the dub was very good. Eric Vale plays The MC and he just has an amazing voice. I dont usually like dubs but its great in this show.
