>In anticipation of the Mobile Suit Gundam series' 40th anniversary in 2019, the Gundam Global Challenge aims to develop a full-sized Gundam that can actually walk.
>It is also alleged to enjoy support from the government of Shinzō Abe, which is determined to build the Gundam to win back popular approval.
>He was dismayed at the price tag (80 billion yen, or $650 million), saying, "If it takes 80 billion, make the real thing."

I thought the ridiculous part of his statement was that a fully functioning Gundam would cost more money than exists on the planet, probably. Not that 80 billion yen was a lot of money for what they were getting.
>>
>>134739080
Explain that shit nerd
>>
>>134740123
It's literally a plot of y=x, y=x^2, and y=x^3, which are how length, area, and volume are related to length, respectively. This alone doesn't actually make his point, you need to also know something about how force and stress scale with length, and it turns out when you try to make something huge, whatever material you were using when it was small will probably not work.
>>
>>134740123
Volume increases exponentially with relation to area, the bigger you make shit it gets exponentially heavier not linearly. So materials need to be top grade for something gigantic that is in motion.
>>
>>134740123
Basically, as you increase the size of an object, it's volume increases faster than it's surface area. Meaning a giant robot wouldn't be able to walk without crushing itself with it's own weight.

>>
>>134741760
Sure the individual parts like arms and legs can be made with the same technique, but then you also have to design a stronger joint that can handle the stresses of walking and punching. Making a joint made of a "harder" material will only cause it to crack. The solution which we don't have yet is a material that is light enough to not add weight and be flexible enough to absorb impact forces.

gigantic fighting robots require both a very lightweight and durable material that won't shatter as well as an energy source that doesn't take up exponentially more room for more energy, so there needs to be an advancement of carbon nanotube or similar technology as well as a revolutionary energy source like a cold fusion generator.

I think by 2020 that fusion plant in France is supposed to be done. By 2030 then we should have 1 molecule thick carbon chain manufacturing down and fusion energy figured out. Honestly the first viable robot might be even bigger than a gundam because I doubt that the Fusion reactor can be made to be small enough to fit in a gundam but the carbon chains should be strong enough to build a robot Big O size.

>>
>>134742014
A walking robot could be made today with modern air frame construction techniques. It would just be expensive. Aluminum framing with carbon fiber plate, or sandwiched foam composites would all work.

The power source is the real problem, we're not even in the ballpark for power yet. Engines are powerful and light enough, but to meter that power out into various robot motions would be a mechanical nightmare. Batteries aren't powerful, light, or long lasting enough to work yet. Some day...

Tokamac can only run for a few minutes. Current estimates on Stellarator are at least half an hour. There's still a long, long way to go, but they're making progress.
>>
>>134744706
MIT promised their reactor will be done in 10 years though.
>>
>>134741903
He's still stupid because the original discussion is about building actual Gundam.
>>
>>134743456
they already have developed compounds that are extremely light and tough.
I imagine that a small mobile suit probably is much easier, and don't tell me we don't have the robotics possible yet when commerical robots are already stronger. Theres even a exoskelton prototype that you can see on youtube, and that boston dynamics dogbot that can run and if you push it it can steady itself.
The push right now is for attack drones because they are much cheaper and far more dangerous. Compared with the average fighter jet they aren't much but against bongistans its effective.

We should focus more on Space Colonies.

Once we have settlements in space, we could just build functional MS in space ignoring square cube law to some extent until we can either discover or engineer an alloy that can defy it. When that is achieved their operation can be extended to use on planets, till then they can still operate in microgravity environments maybe for asteroid mining etc.
