Nen is one of the better magic/power systems I've seen across multiple fantasy universes.
Nen is universal. Every living organism has some degree of aptitude, and those who make skilled use of it do so because they have trained. There are no "chosen ones" who have innate or unearned inheritance of ability.
Nen is balanced. In large part, to gain something you also have to lose something. You can make a punch stronger, but you do so by drawing aura away from defense. You can enhance specific techniques further but at the cost of disadvantages or drawbacks (Kurapika iconifies this well). For the most part, cahracters who are more dangerous in HxH are so not because they have *more* ability, but because they more effectively leverage their advantages.
Nene is coherent, yet flexibility. There are 6 types of nen, and characters are generally oriented toward a single type with some minor aptitude in adjacent types. So not everyone can do everything, creating more defined characters and abilities. At the same time, there is a fair amount of room for flexibility within a given class.
Nene reflects the personality of characters and is a way to further define them. Knuckle has the ability he has because he wants you to prove your worth to him. He'll even give you a bit of a lead, but if you don't prove you can do something with it, you bust. Shoot is cowardly and doesn't like violence. So rather than deal direct damage he steals harmlessly parts of you.
