Betamax childish protagonists that never lose. See: most LN leads.

It all depends how it's handled.
Sonsaku Hakufu is childish idiotic hyperactive and overpowered by main character unlimited potential horseshit. It's perfectly okay because she has huge tits, a short skirt, and her clothes get torn off when she fights.
>>
>>134667284
I'd rather have Cake.
>>
>>134667730
Ikkitousen is a fucking masterpiece.
>>
>>134667284
They all suck, still betamax Shinji is better than the other two. At least it's a true character and not just a wish fulfilling self-insert for beta otaku.
>>
Worse than what?
>>
>>134667284
The worst is a competition between the LN potato-kun that has no personality and is a literal self insert and the moralfag aka. shirou, that kid from claymore, tenma and the guy who punches woman in the face in raildex.
>>
>>134669073
This, a betamax knows his place.
>>
>>134667284
The one that doesn't get any true character development.

Isn't it though? Because modern Shinjis get all sorts of perks even though they're pussies. I think it's still wish fufillment

Gary Stu Onii sama style is fucking great, I love them MC's.

Gary Stu MC's who are just boring dross that aren't likable at all are the worst Aldnoah Zero.
>>
>>134667284
Shinji-core protagonists usually have development focused on their growth and maturing past their flaws. Sometimes childish shounen protagonists are forced to face the harsh realities outside their naive ideals (even if they get past it by clinging to said ideals).

Overcompetent, Gary Stu protagonists exist in a world where they cannot lose, require no character growth, and basically get showered in constant praise and pussy >>134667284
over how amazing they are.
>>
>>134669261
There is a simple solution, a swift kick in the nuts for going out of line. It doesn't have to be literal, it can be metaphorical.
>>
>>134669344
That happened so much to Shinji it stopped being funny, though. Literally every single time he thought he had it figured out.
>>
>>134669332
I hope you're not implying Mika is that.
>>
>>134669344
That's the problem though. Either they get beaten down so much they never progress or they get too uppity and become obnoxious shits
>>
>>134667284
>What is worse, /a/?

You simplifying protagonists into shitty /a/ buzzwords. Gary Stu protags.

Betamax Shinji.

He had one job, still coudn't do it.
>>
>>134670834
At least they got what they deserve. It's better than watching a retarded teenager faggot succeding at everything just because he's the MC or because "MUH FRIENDSHIP, MUH MORALS"
>>
The three have potential to be interesting.

>The perfect Gary Stu that at some point fails catastrophically, triggering a depression and existential crisis.

>The power of friendship shonen MC that goes full edge at some point.

>The betamax that grows some balls after development and becomes badass.

LN MCs are not Shinji-core betamax though, they are just disguised Gary Stus btw.
>>
>>134669506
Mika is close to being that.
>>
>>134669073
>At least it's a true character and not just a wish fulfilling self-insert for beta otaku.
aren't all three? they're pretty much just 3 different personality archetypes, but as the MC they always get the same perks anyway
>>
>>134669506
prove him wrong

The ones that are a combination of all three.
>>
>>134667284
What I'd like to see:

>competent shounen protagonists that never lose
>non-betamax, non-Shinji-core shounen protagonists

We see this all the time with the shoujo-tachi. (We mainly see them in their underwear, but hey.) So why not with the shounens?

It's as if NOBODY watched [K], the 3rd most popular anime outside of Asia.

I can never relate to the hyperactive "muh friendship" type of MC's. They act like retards, somehow win every fight and their stupid friendship is regarded like a sort of "noble savage" wisdom. At least you agree with the thought process of Gary Stu like MC. And betamax characters can be relatable.

But I don't want the beta shinji character to win, I enjoy watching them getting knock down time and time again because they'll never learn their place.
>>
Beta protags are the worst by far
>>
>>134667284
any plot were the MC is the epicenter of all positive change and other characters can't do anything interesting without at least sharing the spotlight with them is the most grating to me.
Basically if the MC is the only character with any agency I stop caring about the world.
>>
>>134667284
Deconstructions.
>>
>>134680148

You mean when the character lack a center? How his identity signifies the things that signify other things? Or how his multiple self-created identities reflect each other? Which characters do you think are deconstructions of themselves, the text or the very narrative of the life itself?
>>
>>134667284
>>hyperactive childish shounen-core protagonists
I can deal with the other two but this just grinds my gears.

Hyperactive Goku clone retards are at least good to go come a fight. Energetic protagonists are fine, you're selling it to kids. It's inoffensive.

You really should divide Shinji-types into the average everyman who's made to go through the emotional wringer(e.g. Shinji himself) and the more generic self-insert cipher protagonist(basically a non-entity with an inoffensive personality that can interact with cute girls). In one, him being a normal person with sympathetic qualities is important as it makes the impact of what goes on more meaningful.

In the other, all the effort was put on the cute girls and you could literally remove him from the story and nothing would change and it wouldn't even matter because Japan would rather just have faceless guys raping them anyway in the doujins.

The Gary Stus, especially the ones from LNs, are the absolute worst because you know the entire story is written just to make them look good.
