So i just finished Utena today. It was pretty great, but i have some questions.
Why Anthy betray Utena in the end? I thought she wanted to be liberated from Akio's grip.
What was up with all the car symbolism in the latter half?
Why were the Nanami episodes so weird?

Anthy suffers from learned helplessness. Being stabbed by a million swords of humanity's hatred for all eternity and having your brother turn into AKIO does that to a person.
She genuinely cared for Utena, she felt remorse for what she did to her, and tried to kill herself, and later willingly went to get stabbed again when she betrayed her, and begged Utena to run away when she came to save her.

It was in her nature. She's supposed to be "the bride", even if she came to like Utena to some level, she belongs to Akio, and it took Utena sacrificing herself and taking her punishment for that to change.I don't know about the cars, aren't they supposed to represent power and big dicks? That's what Akio's all about.
And I find funny that some Nanami episodes were even weirder than pretty much anything on the show, even if they were full of comedy.

Shiori still loved her. It was a very complicated thing. Enokido himself confirmed it too and Shiori and Juri mend their relationship at the end of the series. You can happily imagine that they fugged each other every night.
Utena was great but it's like between the symbolism and the development the director forgot the most important thing about anime is that's it's fun to watch. Utena is far from perfect because of that alone.

Penguindrum just became ridiculously messy by the end, whereas Yuri Kuma was less ambitious, but much more solid overall.

The movie really elaborates on it. It remains vague as shit, but it's pretty just taking control and responsibility for your life and choices.
In the show, the reason why Akio can't ever succeed is that he won't take responsibility for his wish, and keeps allowing Anthy to take the punishment. Utena's wish is to free Anthy from her fate, and she does for one turn, by taking the swords. Anthy ultimately saves herself by walking away.
In the movie, it's all about the cars. Akio can't find the key to his. He hurts Anthy trying to find it. When Utena wins, Anthy tells her that if they remain in this world they can have everything. Then Anthy goes to give Utena the sword -- her power. Utena says no, that there's a whole world outside of this.
(This being a whole world away from their gender roles. Touga in the movie is pretty much an acceptance that even if I want to move away from it, I did truly love you. Utena truly loved the ideal of the prince, but it's fake, and the gender dichotomy and roles are fake. But she still loved it.)

But to get back to the cars, a car'll rust if it's not used. The key was Anthy's all along, and Utena was the support to leave. Akio would never take responsibility for his choices, for his faults, and would let Anthy take the blame. But when someone offered to stand beside her and take whatever punishment there was WITH her, there's the key. There's the drive. There's the ability to make the dream come true.
Anthy, Akio and the fake world and the fake castle are pretty much symbolism for their abuse relationship. "This is the only place you can be a prince, in this fake little academy. Stay in your coffin." Abuse substance by convincing someone there's nothing else. Abuse victims will push away everyone because they believe the lie so much, because they believe in that hypothetical world where there's a prince and a princess and a castle.
The end of the movie is Anthy and Utena driving away from all of that, and it isn't towards some paradise. It's a shitty place, but at that point they're laying side by side and both taking responsibility together.
Or maybe it's all bullshit what do I know.
