Standalone? 9/10. Probably a little too slow/boring for western audiences.
In the context of his other works? 8/10. Too many recycled ideas.
Middle section was great, the other parts were all right.

I liked Garden of Words much more.
I could relate much more to the depressed cake than to any character 5cmxS had to offer.
Of course, that's personal preference, but on an objective level I think both film are at least on par.

I went through something similar, people who rate it highly haven't gotten over their past, just like the protagonist. The art was pretty great, though. Something also felt off about the pacing, though I can't place my finger on it. 5/10.
8/10 (meaning great). The characters could've been better and more fleshed out. It's easier to feel empathy towards good characters (not that I didn't with the movie as it is). Everything else is great.

I'm a sucker for forbidden/lost love stories, so this one rates high for me, even if i at it's core it is mediocre.
If you like these kinds of stories, I highly recommend White Knights by Dostoevsky. It's a relatively short read.

The assumption that people rate it based on what their own life is like is pretty much applying or projecting his own way of thinking on other people though.
He seems to believe you can only like that movie because they relate very strongly to the protagonist or think his behaviour is justified because he dislikes it for the opposite reason.
It's still projecting even if it's inverted in a way.

Well, not really. He took initiative and solved their DORAMA on the spot and not let her leave again.
Fuicking 5cmPerSec has boy confess to girl, and let their relationship linger with the whole "I want this moment to last forever" bullshit, but didn't even get her an engagement ring or a promise to marry her or something. Instead that GODDAMN TRAIN got in the way.
