japan is a horrible country at the moment, it suffers from 33000 suicides per year and a couple of thousands die from overworking. Working 8ish hours per day is considered part time and would not be enough to pay rent. Drugs are horribly tabuu since people basically live 5 meeter's away from each other so they resort to shit like alcohol and anime for escapism, its actually really sad
