They already did this with the first season and the result was horrible. And it was only 52 chapters instead of 90 that you suggest. And they also omitted important stuff like Akari being artificial and Michelle being born from love in favor of some needless ending fight montage so they still have to add it somehow.
The arrival of the Chinese Tentacle Battleship might be a better place to end it.

I get a feeling this wasn't intended and was more a result of the production meltdown at Liden Films. I remember the episode itself being delayed to hell and the fight montage nabbing animation from the OP and even from the two OVAs in a desperate attempt to make it to the end of its run-time.
By the way, what do people think of the new character designs? I'm a bit partial to the first season's detailed work but it's not like Liden did a good job of keeping it consistent at all.
