Pretty sure Guts has a more hellish life. Kaneki had it rough with Yamori but I don't think it comes close to the Eclipse and what came afterwards.

-Griffith, after activating the Crimson Behelit from his own suicide attempt and misery, summons the God Hand.
-He sacrifices everyone, allowing them to be Branded, eaten alive, and their souls dragged into eternal agony and suffering due to the Brand.
-Guts and Casca are the only ones left. Griffith, now Femto, rapes her brutality in front of Guts, forcing him to watch.

They made Void appear from a hurricane instead of the subtle bleeding down from the eclipsed sun. They also made Casca see Griffith as he was before Femto raping her and made it sound like she enjoyed it without as much vaginal blood/tears.

Is Berserk worth reading for story? I picked up tokyo ghoul for the story and tragedy aspect and I heard Berserk was also a tragedy but when I see people talk about berserk it is usually some fight they are talking about and I don't enjoy or care for fights in anime anymore.
At least Kaneki can sleep without daemons trying to grab his ass. Nothing is more tormenting than not being able to sleep in peace.

It's easy to write a character who suffers a lot, the real challenge comes from making all the suffering the character goes through feel relatable and his struggle inspiring.
