According to IMDB, 5cm/s cost an estimated $5,000,000 to make. It seems fair to assume a full season would cost a similar amount. 40k fans are usually willing to spend a lot of money on it, but I'm not sure if they'd be willing to spend that much.
Maybe GW would help because a well-done anime could help them push into the Asian market.
