That effort won't always be recognized isn't exactly a new or particularly interesting theme. In my case, that Aoyama generally handled herself with dignity and grace even when she struggled and ultimately failed was something I found sympathetic and endearing. If I'm at fault for having sympathy for someone who tried their best but failed, I'll just have to take that on the chin.

Love isn't dependent or hard work or anything like that. It's a result of comparability and circumstances bringing people together. Aoyama was a nice, hard-working girl, but ultimately her presence hardly affected Sorata. With Mashiro, Sorata found inspiration and actually managed to somewhat develop as a person.
In retrospect, Aoyama and Sorata could have had a romantic relationship. However, both would have probably been worse off for it.

the main problem with this anime was all 3 of the characters in the love triangle are singularly unappealing.
1) MC is bland haremshit trash. He is objectively a horrible human being, furthermore he is personalityless self insert of the worst kind. His bland nothingness somehow attracts all the girls around him while he lives in perfect oblivion bitching about having to change a hot girls clothing because he doesn't have a dick. Irritating and worthless.
2) Blond autist; she's everything that's wrong with Moe; in fact she's probably the embodiment of Moe taken to the extreme. The author clearly thought Yui in K-On! is MOE! i know lets punch up all the autism cause that's MOE!! The result was a character who if 3d showed all the signs of serious mental illness, ranging from mental retardation to schizophrenia. Apparently this is MOE. All i know is it was irritating as all fuck, and not MOE at all, except to man children too intimidated by girls with personality, opinion and independence.
3) Brown haired Tsundere; and then there was the generic tsundere. She suffered from a serious case of "add on" disease, where the author needed another girl for his love triangle and decided to mail it in by going generic childhood tsundere. She had no actual reason to like the blaaaaaaa mc other then he was the mc. If you thought about it rationally, she was WAY TOO FUCKING good for him, and would be much happier with ANYONE else. Hell, even an abusive womanizer at least would have kept her from dying of boredom by a guy who'd never stick it in, and rather bitch, whine or run for cover when she tossed herself at him naked.
With shit characters like this, i'm still amazed there were people who actually watched this trash straight through.
