How bad is Escaflowne ?
>>
>>134392489

It's not really terribly bad but I didn't really feel like it delivered much in the second half, great OST and OP though. Looks purdy too.

Escaflowne's budget was huge
>>
The series is one of those things that that ever single anime aficionado of a certain age bracket will have watched. It has some flaws -- most glaringly with the rushed latter half -- but it still stands as a classic.

I still remember the Yoko Kanno concert at Otakon (think it was 1999?), where the audience spontaneously started singing the lyrics to "Yakusoku Wa Iranai", it was one of the most beloved anime OPs of that era.

It's a shame about the movie though. It was so terrible that it pretty much killed the franchise. The movie had a certain viciousness to it, and was completely lacking the romanticism and wonder of the earlier series.
>>

GOD TIER OST

Its up there for me along with Fate/zero OST for having the most epic OST in anime.

>>
>>134393412
I'm not claiming it's a hard-and-fast rule, but they're clearly linked, and comparing Escaflowne to Garo as examples of 1996 and 2014/15 is stupid.

I heard that the reason the ost is so good is because Yoko's husband helped out.

>Kyoani has average budgets.
I've never seen an inside source on that, and I'd stake my life that Nichijou had a higher budget than the average KyoAni anime, anyway. Meanwhile, look at Dennou Coil, or SAC, or Akira, for evidence of how budget contributes to visual quality.
>>
>>134392489
The series is just fantastic.

The movie is just awful, though.
>>
>>134393234
OPM has veterans doing the anime and, although good looking at times, doesn't completely stand out.
Kyoani does insane work for their budget and who knows how they do it.

Disregarding that, the budget for Escaflowne helped a lot.

Dance of Curse might not seem that special to a person who hasn't watched the series -- but if you have, it indelibly will be associated with the concepts of Escaflowne's first flight and epic mecha battles.

Perfect example of how a strong visuals can synergize with a strong soundtrack.
>>
>>134395054
Goddamn, I really must rewatch Escaflowne again.
>that moment Dance of Curse is used with the first step
Arghhh. It really makes the battle actually epic.

I also love how the villains have only one type of solid liquid that doesn't make it complicated to know what they can do. And also how fast they notice Hitomi being important and try to capture her.

Its a great anime ruined by its ending.

It went from 8/10 to 6/10 for me just because of the shitty final episode
>>
>>134393140
>It was so terrible that it pretty much killed the franchise
It was dead to begin with since it was not so successful in Japan, the movie was made only because it sold well in US. As for the movie being shit, yeah, can't fight against it.
>>
>>134398085
It wasn't trying to be? Then why was it called Escaflowne? Why not make something brand new entirely? Let's put this aside though.

You know, when making a re-imagining, you don't have to try to be the original, you're right. You can change things. You can be something completely different. It's probably even better that way, instead of being a carbon copy. You can defend something the way you're doing. The problem is, hopefully, you'd do something good with the changes. Where the Escaflowne movie fails is that it takes most of the things that made the original so good in the first place and just ruins them. Everything is made so much worse and the entire feeling of Escaflowne is detroyed.

I think this post >>134393140 in the thread put it best:
>The movie had a certain viciousness to it, and was completely lacking the romanticism and wonder of the earlier series.
>>
>>134393924
KyoAni does all, and I mean ALL of their shit in-house, which is pretty rare. Only Ghibli does that anymore and they're basically going under. It also helps that they have their own school to train animators into future employees. They know what they're doing, basically.

Incredible voice acting
>>
>>134392489

Escaflowne was overshadowed by Evangelion. Escaflowne was flowy, romantic and reveled in itself where Evangelion was harsh, abrupt and deliberately tore down the setting they spent the first half of the series constructing. Evangelion's success shaped the kind of series that came out for the rest of the late 90's and early 2000s.
>>
>>134402559

How? They barely even constructed a setting to begin with, it's incredibly bare-bones.

Why not? The fact that Issac fucking Newton was the main villain, was foreshadowed in episode 1 and never actually named was fucking brilliant.

As others have said, the anime series is strong, and the movie is mostly a cash in.

Escaflowne hits a nice spot between experimental and mainstream ideas. It blends shounen and shoujo elements rather successfully into a fairly unique world. The original plot was cut down to fit into 26 episodes, which I feel makes the series stronger. It's denser with a faster pace. The music is good. The mecha and character designs are good. The plot is good.

Dilandau is character type that I have not seen successfully duplicated elsewhere.

Has great aesthetics but the plot falls apart sharply towards the end and the cast is mostly insufferable. Much like Do You Remember Love and other oldies its loved largely by nostalgiafags who were into anime when it started getting big in the west but unlike most oldies it still mangaes to hold up remarkably well despite its flaws. Movie however is complete and utter shit and is only good for the animation but beyond that its lacking a lot of what made the TV series worked.

>"Shoji Kawamori first proposed the series after a trip to Nepal, during which he visited the foggy mountain region and pictured a hidden world where an epic focusing on both fate and divination should be set. When he returned, he proposed the series to Bandai Visual and Sunrise. According to Kawamori, his pitch for the series was simple: "if Macross was robotic mecha and love songs, why not a story about robotic mecha and divining powers?"

The world needs more "robotic mecha and X". Although I suppose that train of thought is also what gets us stuff like Cross Ange.
