Pina, due to her status, can't actually be in the harem. Later there is serious discussions on her trying to secure a marriage with Itami in order to gain political advantage and strengthen Pina''s right to rule, but at that point Itami is actually over-qualified as a royal consort and had no reason to agree to it.
Itami the Dragon Slayer built up a reputation, purely by accident, and at some point he no longer had anything to gain marrying a princess. Making it even harder is he is contracted with Rory, who as a demigod out-ranks any mortal princess by default. Pina couldn't be head-wife, and as a princess she really can't allow her status to be diminished by being a lesser wife. So it is all a cluster-fuck and she has no chance.

America is supplying many pieces of hardware to the JSDF in the story. They are also expecting some share of the benefits when all isa said and done. At no point did the politicians WANT to kill Americans, and they were surprised the agents were there at all.
Officially Pina's visit to Tokyo was a state secret. The government decided that they would keep the US out of this. The Americans found out anyway, and decided to kidnap her because she doesn't legally exist and it isn't a crime for a non-existent person to go missing. They only had 24 hours to get a team together because she was leaving the next day. Everything as rushed and it ends in a clusterfuck. The whole thing was brushed aside and both sides pretend it never happened. After all, there was no American agents just as there was no Princess Pina.

Not exactly - we know Itami is a slacker and has an odd personality. He just doesn't really share everything about his life. His coworkers didn't even know he was a Ranger or JSF trained.
He probably thought there wasn't any downside to marrying her. Whether or not he "loved" her? Who knows. Maybe he loved her as a sister, or maybe he liked her and we don't know how Itami deals with romance. He doesn't exactly act normal. As to women among bandits, remember that those particular bandits were survivors of the former armies that attempted to attack the JSDF. So at the very least, they're capable of holding their own (if not somewhat willing to join them as they all abandoned their dead leaders rather than risk getting raped and killed). In addition, they'd at least have some authority and say over who they get to fuck.
Not to mention, many of the bandits were already raiding convoys and sating themselves.

Pretty damn useful for sieges, as she'd be able to protect the main attack group from a hail of arrows. Of course, I doubt her wind capabilities would have allowed her to stop a hail of bullets. At most, maybe divert their flight paths, but with many of them far heavier than arrows, the most she could have probably done is just focusing on diverting them away from herself. She definitely couldn't alter the wind enough to even affect the helicopters. But as we see, she came out of it completely intact. Just extremely worn out (the other girls had wrapped or stick-on bandages).

I like some of the characters too. The art is generally competent but rarely "good"--notable exception being the one spread where the choppers fly in blasting Wagner, that was pretty good.
The plot meanders. There's no sense of tension or drama. The dialogue is cringe-inducing. The setting is cool, but totally wasted. Attempts by the writer to introduce a sense of geopolitics turn out to be ham-fisted.
I explain Gate to people as "Japanese Tom Clancy tries to write a manga". Only it's not good "Red October" Tom Clancy, it's late-career Tom Clancy when all of his shit was ghost written by retards.
